Freshmen, Frat Boys, Sorority Girls getting drunk so they can have an excuse to hook up with Frat Boys.

Bad mix.

This is golden. I was in a fraternity and we spent countless hours during VEISHEA working on our float for the parade. Obviously there are some that fall into your stereotype, but c'mon man, I knew both greeks and non-greeks that fit the bill.

Just don't generalize people like that. Makes you look like an idiot.

Not soapboxing here, but I spent the majority of my Friday nights during VEISHEA finishing our float or helping with the parade for the next morning. Sure I enjoyed myself Saturday.

Anyways, carry on

This thread is proof we are not a riot school and that we are a basketball school considering all of the posts on the basketball team here!

Yup. I think the vast majority of Frats and Sororities are actually good things. However, there are 3 or 4 of each that are full of dipshits that do things like this.

I feel for you. First year my son is 21 for VEISHEA, so I have been worried this year. He texted me that he was safely at home when he heard about the riots knowing what I am like. Thankful for the massive group engineering project he was working on.

I can guarantee you that a good portion of the students out there were not 21. Towers, Friley, and Greek Row are all close to Campustown. Think of the huge number(record numbers, in fact) of freshman and sophomore aged students that were in close proximity when this who thing started. A lot of them probably joined in just to say they were a part of it. Im not saying its the underclassmen's fault-this could have been incited by anyone-but I do suspect they were a part of the reason it got out of hand.

Your statements throughout the thread don't appear you think that way. Whatever makes you feel better about yourself.

There are idiots everywhere, in every house, every dorm, every class. You are completely generalizing things.

I bet some of those kids are in Math 150. Does this mean all Math/Business majors are a bunch of rioting hooligans?

Thats exactly how the Bin Laden riots started. Bunch of dorms gathering up. I entire floor was out there.

Would people be outraged if no light poles ever got torn down?

That was the big mistake imo and where it got really bad. Then you hear that it actually did hit a guy in the head. Flipping cars on their sides and throwing beers are one thing, but there's not a lot of danger involved with those. Metal light posts going down like that is seriously dangerous.

It's a pretty unfortunate situation.

While I agree with your thought that we should wait until all the facts are known, you also proved my point when you said "sometimes these situations arise and you become a part of something you didn't want to be in at all. Bystanders become enveloped in stuff who had no part in what started.".

That is how being a bystander can turn into a participant and why you make the decision to distance yourself from the beginning. Kids make mistakes, adults make mistakes, etc but it is how you position yourself that can determine how easily you can get sucked into something bigger than you intended.

True. I even said in my post I get your point. The only thing I am disagreeing with people in the thread is just to suspend a player just because they were there. Collegiate teams/coaches are totally able to suspend people even if they don't break the law, I get that. I just don't believe ours should without any proof of rioting/causing damage. I know I would be very upset as a player if I was suspended just for standing and viewing idiots a block or two away destroying stuff.

I should say there is a huge difference between being a bystander getting caught up in a riot viewing or not able to immediate leave it and not participating in it AND a bystander getting caught up in a riot and joining in. The latter should totally come with suspension if they joined in the violence IMO.

I doubt the majority of the students in this class were out.

But I'm sure at least 90% of Tri Delts and DZ's were out there.

I'm also sure the majority of Greeks weren't out there. But it's a select few houses that are nuts.

FYI. For those of you who think you "have a right" to stand there and watch and therefore are not complicit in a riot, I direct you to Iowa Code 723.3.

https://coolice.legis.iowa.gov/Cool...llinfo&service=IowaCode&ga=83&input=723#723.3

And it may be worthy to note the part of 723.1 that states "A person who willingly joins in or remains a part of a riot, knowing or having reasonable grounds to believe that it is such, commits an aggravated misdemeanor".

So if you are not acting in a violent manner or with intent to act in a violent manner and are in a place where you can't hear a peace officer give an order to disperse then it sounds to me like you CAN stand around and watch...in order to be taking part in a riot they would have to be acting in a "violent" or "disturbing" manner, as riot is defined in 723.1.

Don't make that stupid first statement then. I've been on a VEISHEA committee for 3 out of my 4 years at ISU and I'm deeply disappointed with last night's events. Most of my friends have been on a VEISHEA committee.

The cops never told anyone to disperse, or at least I left before they had the bull horns out. They just told people to get off the street.

You shouldn't need to wait until you get slapped on the wrist to realize you are doing something wrong.

3. Cancelling VEISHEA will do nothing. 1) The students will riot because of VEISHEA being cancelled and 2) the future years students know when VEISHEA should be and will still consider it an unofficial party weekend.

I think you are wrong about this. It may have a bad turnout for this year resulting in potential riots because of the already planned parties. However, after this year, VEISHEA would slowly be forgotten about. I would highly doubt anyone would consider it an unofficial party weekend next year.

I apologize, but can we stop with this "couldn't get away from it" BS. Whether it was 88, 92, 94, 04 or 14.

I went to ISU for 5 glorious years. Been back umpteen times. Know the areas fairly well.

We're not talking about an alley closed in on 3 sides by 10 story buildings.

We're talking about Welch and Lincoln way. Open 50' across, more in most places. Accessible to go any number of directions.

Sure it may be "difficult". You may not be able to go the way you want to "easily". But there are other ways to go.

If you are about anywhere in Ames for more that 5 minutes - you made some choice to remain there.
