How did a dry VEISHEA work? Did they not sell alcohol in Ames and shut down the bars?
I'm not saying you are guilty, and should be thrown in jail with the dudes who tipped over a car. Not in any sense. But if you think are you completely innocent in this, you are wrong. Again, just my opinion.
If there are no bystanders, there is no riot.
Notice how at least 4 or 5 of the kids in that video are wearing a backpack at 11PM in campus town? That screams underaged person. I know it would be difficult, but if they could make Campustown pedestrian only(no vehicles) and card people getting into the area during VEISHEA, that could help the situation. Like I mentioned in my post earlier, Campustown is in close proximity to a LOT of underaged students who want to be part of the party during VEISHEA. They know that Welch Ave is the heart of the party scene, so where else do you think they are gonna go? This means a lot of people, with varying levels of sobriety, filling the streets unnecessarily. When that happens, bad things have a higher chance to happen.
Back at ya. Must be nice to not be responsible for yourself. To find every loophole against COMMON SENSE.
That's the part of CF that amazes me. Never taking responsibility for anything. Always someone else's fault and helpless.

To be honest, and I know some will disagree, but spending time finding out some of these kids and getting rid of them (if students), seems to send a strong message to me. I don't know for sure, but if I knew an expulsion was possible, I would think some kids would be more careful.
I don't think people watching did anything wrong honestly. You can't expect the average person to be smart whatsoever, let alone have an understanding of how the psychology of the mob mentality works.

...and look at that, you can quite easily ID the culprits. If the rumors are true, and the kid who got hit has passed, I truly feel really sorry for those people. Absolutely no intent to kill the kid, but unfortunately your actions led to his death.
Nope only a few of them are dry. If you're over 21 in most of them you can have all the alcohol you want as long as none of it is open with an underage person in the room
No booze in the dorms period. No parties with alcohol in student apartments or greek houses.

lol. So now it's "holier than thou" to disapprove of rioters? Please. Those standing around in the mob, even if they're at the outskirts are still complicit. A riot has power because of numbers. Not all participants may have thrown a bottle or personally tipped a car, but they're still part of it. Their presence enables the active participants. Like someone else said, when was the last time you heard of a 20 person riot?
In that case fine, but I don't get penalizing the future for a couple idiots...I've been to Veishea for the campus stuff and off-campus stuff and it's such a cool event. I'd rather see it reformed than cancelled.
Really going to be three options to solve this
1. Cancel VEISHEA and people riot over that
2. Keep the same thing and people continue to riot
3. Keep the same thing and people realize rioting is stupid
Now #1 is most likely to happen but I think the best course is to see if we can survive the week and then set up a plan for next year. I don't see canceling the rest of the week being successful and possibly worse than just condoning it.

I think there's a difference between "doing something wrong" and being responsible (at least partially) for it happening.
If there's weren't hundreds of onlookers - does anyone really think this escalates like it does? That video of the light pole coming down. 5-10 people are actually "Doing something wrong", but hundreds/thousands are egging the situation on and certainly preventing the police from doing their jobs.
If you're there (and not trying to leave) you are absolutely part of the problem.
Is it human nature to want to see? Be curious? Absolutely. But you still bear the responsibility to not be part of the problem.

Bars were open, but people were not allowed to gather on the street. There was some stoppage of alcohol sales in town as well, if I remember correctly. There was still plenty of drinking, but because groups couldn't get too big, it stemmed the mob mentality.
