Unlike many of you I don't think this was the right decision. Its not going to stop students from being wild this week, and I would bet people will still come into town this weekend. Cancelling veisha in the long run was a good idea, but this could cause the situation to escalate more. Now instead of rioting for no reason they may riot because it was cancelled.

Up the police presence and let nothing slide for the rest of the week. A slew of arrests might nip any retaliation in the bud.

Personally, I think a reasonable response for the future, I'd say cancel it until all current students are gone. Then you can pick it up again when you've got a full campus that hasn't experienced it before. That might help dispel the culture that surrounds it, since you won't have older students passing on the tradition to younger ones.

If Iowa State ever wins a National Championship, god have mercy on Ames.

If they riot tonight they have stones. There will be media cameras everywhere.

Game will definately be on, not a part of VEISHEA, rather just coincides with VEISHEA. It is a sanctioned practice and one of very few the team gets in the spring, so it will definately happen.

Not that I think the spring game is going to be affected, but all they would have to do is say they're still going to hold practice, but fans can't come.

The question now is: do the students retailate this weekend with a full scale riot? It'll be interesting to see how many police are on hand this weekend.

He basically answered that with - people riot this weekend, the board that is going to meet to decide VEISHEA's future isn't going to need to meet very long.

The main driver of this was the hospitalized student. Really stupid people.

Cancelling had to be done IMO. It sucks, but they made their bed....

Any more riots/injuries this weekend cancels VEISHEA for the foreseeable future. This cancelling is testing the students for the future.

They already got ticket sale money I guess. Don't know if that covers the cost of booking the acts though.

But will they be forced to give refunds since they are canceling the concerts?

I'm not just talking about the concerts, I mean money that is brought in from the entire week's events.

It will keep all those people planning on coming up for the weekend away. Definitely the right decision. Still sucks though
Eh, but how many of the out of towners know that there is actually university run festivities and it's not just a week(end) of getting blitzed? They could care less knowing the official stuff is cancelled.

Good idea, but the last riot was 10 years ago. Those students should be gone already.

#1 Should be zero tolerance for the rest of the week. Being a ******* = free ride to Nevada.
#2 VEISHEA, if kept, can't be named VEISHEA. VEISHEA has a tainted brand.

God this student is heartbroken. I feel for him. Can you imagine all the work they have done, and it gets cancelled two days into it? Jeeeezus.

They're going to refund what they can.

I say keep the ticket sales money and use that to rebuild the damage. Students caused the destruction, have them pay for it with the ticket sales.

If they retaliate by rioting then they are dumb too and they should be expelled!

They should retaliate against the rioters, not against Dr. Leath or the University. They should find the rioters and turn these hooligans to the cops.
