What people are saying is one game a season does not make. Even that run and gun team you cited that was fun to watch dropped an absolute turd, and not in November, but in March. It happens!
Literally no one here is saying that 1 or 2 or even a handful of games make a season. JFC with this sh*t.

Tough loss but this won't ruin Iowa State's tournament resume. Some issues to work on but another opportunity on Sunday for a good win. Make free throws and it's a close game so I don't think there's any reason to freak out just need to adjust to higher levels of competition. Now I'm going to run away from this site for a while.
Sound advice. I was going to scan thru all these posts. I think I'll pass and check in again tomorrow, game time.

Hopefully we show a pulse tomorrow. It is funny though how a couple of games has completely changed the thinking of the fans about this team, and it's players.

I wouldn’t call us a young team. We have a lot of new players to mesh but Milan is the only freshman getting meaningful minutes. Gilbert is shooting 11% from 3 but we need his game going to the basket. IMO the biggest thing we lack now is a reliable 3rd guard, and we really need 4 guards. If Jones and Pav prove to be liabilities against high major competition I wonder if Jelani Hamilton might be able to help. The staff may have deemed him not ready but at some point I think they need to give him a shot.
About middle of the road in experience this year. Out of all of division I we are 144th in experience at 1.99 years.

Losing yesterday is no big deal. The way we played Thursday and Friday is a tiny bit concerning. Offense seemed very stale. Sometimes I don't understand our switching on defense.

They'll get things figured out.

We are certainly not a veteran team. Tamin just a sophomore as is Watson. Milan and Omaha freshmen. And as you said, many newcomers.

It's not like we lost to VT because of effort or talent. Feel like there are a few areas that have stood out in the tournament against better competition:
  • Poor Free Throw Shooting. Even if we only shoot in the high 60's against VT we lost 5ish points.
  • VT got at least 6 points off under basket inbound plays.
  • 3 Point Differential. VT: -18pts (39percent vs 24percent) / VCU: -24pts (43p vs 15p)
  • We lack consistent jump shooters. I mentioned 3 point shooting in the prior point, but it seems guys aren't willing to take open 10-15 footers.
Feel like we are a work-in-progress, but seems like we need to run some offense where motion and screens get guys open jump shots.

We are lacking an identity on offense right now. We need to turn people over and get out and run or we need to change our starting lineup. We only have one shooter in our starting lineup. I think maybe we need to have King come off the bench and let Milan play the 4. Right now we have two guards that like to get to the rim and two post players who have no outside shot. That mix doesn’t work.

There really isn’t much of an offensive system. It’s just not TJs strength, but this is still a relatively inexperienced staff, and they’ll keep learning and getting better. There have certainly been some shooting limitations the past couple of years that drastically limited what the staff can do. But there is some offensive skill, so hopefully they. A figure out how to get some matchups to exploit. Saw a little of it with Milan down on the block.

We have some good defenders, but so far they have not been turning teams over. Also, guards were going under screens a lot yesterday, even against shooters. Not sure if that was intentional or just a mistake. Gabe was so damn good at anticipating screens, beating the screener to the spot and making shooters’ lives difficult. Gilbert can be very disruptive defensively, and Jones gets after it, but they have a way to go to approach what Gabe could do defensively.

Late to the party here, and I know similar sentiments have already been posted, but I am seeing A LOT of irrational overreactions to a loss on a neutral court to a pretty solid ACC program in this thread. I would have been more upset had we actually lost to VCU.

Could we have played better? Sure. And all of the missed FT's, particularly the front ends of those 1 and 1's, were backbreaking.

But it's only the 6th game of the season. Waaaaaayyy too early to start waving any sort of white flag.

Tomorrow's game against T A&M will also be a tough one. Decent chance we come back to Ames 5-2. And it still won't be reason for panic, unless we get blown out by 25.

Uhh...we are #1 in torvik on forced turnover percentage not sure what you're looking at.

Our opponents have more turnovers than fg makes.

We have the wrong guys taking the shots and they're also taking bad shots. Milan could have scored another 20 last night if they'd gotten the ball to him.
