A bunch of reviews hit Metacritic today. A horror movie averaging 83/100 is very rare, and there are many perfect 100/100 reviews.
Ok. I'm not sure how I'd even categorize this movie. Technically a horror movie but like none I've personally ever seen before. It doesn't rely on a bunch of blood or jumps though there are a handful of those. The pacing is slow and meticulous which builds this sense of doom and dread as the movie unravels. I ended up feeling...genuinely disturbed almost like I just saw something raw and too real. Did I like it? It's an excellently made movie. From the cinematography to the score it is all great. That being said this ain't a movie that I think the masses will love. It's a slow burn and makes you earn the terror and fear. People are gonna see 'horror' and 'scary as hell' etc from critics and think it's gonna be something they've seen. It's not that.
I thought it was great. Original. Disturbing as eff. I'd definitely recommend it full aware that some people are gonna hate it and be bored by a lot of it. Such is the way with a lot of horror movies.

most disturbing may be that it's loosely based on a handful of documented instances from the Puritan era.

I know you said its original, but if you were to compare the style, what's a film you'd compare it to.
You've actually really got me interested with the slow development and feeling of doom.
I'm gonna have to sleep on that question about comparing it to something else.
Final thought for the night: something happens in the first fifteen or so minutes that tells you what this filmmaker is capable of doing. Remember that. That hooked me and though it was a slow and deliberate pace for a great deal after that instance you knew things were gonna get pretty disturbing by the end.

I was gonna say The Crucible last night but wasn't sure how to word how they are similar but you nailed it.
Just saw it. I don't mind a slow burn but felt it ended just as it was finally getting somewhere.
When it ended the very first thought in my head was "wtf did I just watch?"
I will say it was very well made. Great music, genuinely eerie stuff. I would have changed how it ended.

I agree with everything you said. One thing I was impressed with was how real it felt; right down to how they talked. Sometimes it was hard to understand their conversations due to heavy accents and just the way they talked back then (thee, thou, dost). It added to the realism though, which made the sense of dread more real.
Just got back from this movie. I only went to see it based on this thread. I want to know who is going to be sending me my money back? Someone also owes me two hours of my life back!
I definitely want to see this, but I'm going to be disappointed if this is like It Follows. That was such a letdown for me.
I thought It Follows was better than I expected it to be and kind of a throwback to when horror movies were legitimately creepy and didn't rely so much on jump scares to get a rise out of its audience. Or maybe it was the creepy 80s synthesizer music that made me nostalgic.
