Pac-12 to decide whether to expand within a couple weeks

This is the PAC one shot to grab legit P5 programs that offer a brand new time zone TV wise.. They won't get another shot.

I agree with this, which is why I think that if the Pac-12 says it is not expanding, it is likely because the B1G/Pac/ACC alliance is going to be pretty substantial. Something like those leagues agreeing to play 2 non-con games a year against each other, and maybe even tying themselves together by bidding out the media rights for those 42 games a year as a separate special package.

Otherwise, it’s pretty short sighted for the Pac-12 to not expand at all. Quite frankly the value of the B12 schools is not going to get higher. If they think they can wait and see how things go, these schools in some sort of G5 middle ground will probably lose TV eyeballs over time. Jumping directly from a league with OU and UT to one with USC and Oregon, with no gap, keeps their value as high as possible.

With an "alliance of teams" amongst the 3 other power conferences. You probably don't have to worry about USC and Oregon going to the B1G. With all that.. I'm feeling REALLY good about a B1G invite, which would be the holy grail for our athletic department

Can confirm, I have driven thru the Flint Hills, and I saw BOTH of the beautiful trees there.

Reality is that any midwestern town is a pretty good place to live, but a terrible place to go on vacation. And for 90% of the country their perception is wrapped around the vacation part.

Also, Stillwater, Lubbock, Manhattan, Ames... everyone is entitled to bag on the other towns while pretending theirs is so way much better. Its a perk of being in the league.

Included in their scheduling agreement, if Notre Dame wishes to join a conference, it can only join the ACC. This agreement is tied to the ACC’s GOR running through 2036.

The Big 12 schools are toxic. Inviting them means relegating yourself to second class status. Trying to defeat the Big 10/SEC media won't work. They have decided what they think the end goal is here. By maintaining the status quo, the Pac 12 can get some warm fuzzies about being invited to the party......for now. Data doesn't matter right now. Perception does, and a decade of mocking the Big 12 has done its damage.

But they somehow over the last decade found enthusiasm for Texas Tech? Come on man I am all for a good trolling but at least be entertaining. If you are going to beat the drum of "destinations" the Pac should add Hawaii and Pepperdine instead of Texas Tech and Kansas State. Instead of adding a trip to Manhattan, Kansas they could go all in and add a school in Manhattan, New York

What if the SEC decided to make a northern play and scoop up ISU and Kansas? This whole thing is going to play our like a game of Risk so why not? Then they would be squarely in the backyard of the other major power conference in B1G.

We dont fit the traditional model of the SEC but traditions have already been cast aside.

Kind of a pipe dream but I could see the SEC saying screw it, we are land grabbing.

I don’t think this is true at all. Utah and Colorado were not world beaters when they got Pac-10 invites. They simply fit the conference’s profile and goals. I’m not a TV exec but adding Tech/OSU/ISU/KU long term makes the 12 existing schools more money and expands the footprint. The Pac-12 becomes the only major league focused west of the Mississippi. Unless the B1G is going to share with the Pac out of the kindness of their hearts, this is their best move. I still think it won’t happen, but even when I try not to think like an ISU fan, I’m convinced that this is the smartest move for that league.

That would be news to me on the Commerical District. People over at PF&M seem to think (or are telling me) that they are pencils down on that for the moment. Hilton appears to be a bigger priority at the moment

The Pac 12 is already second class status. They are paid less than all other conferences by a significant amount. As has been said, if they don't take this opportunity to expand they are dead men walking too. They may continue to exist but they will be left in the dust as far as competing with the other conferences, due to the inequality of money being made. I'm not saying anything will be announced soon, but the Pac12 has to expand or understand they will be relegated to also-run status just as the eight remaining Big 12 schools would be.

Here's what we know:
TX & OK to SEC
Clemson and FSU request membership to SEC (no announcement)
ESPN biggest player in ACC and SEC
Momentum for expanding CFP to 12
Pac12/B1G/ACC in talks (no surprise)
B12 left out of talks (no surprise due to big pending $$$)

Assumption:
SEC wants to continue its expanded presence in the CFP. Adding OK and TX immediately lends credibility to that.
No announcement on Clemson and FSU when the TX & OK ratification was very quick suggests this is an ESPN power move bluff to get other conferences to move to expand with 'less' marketable teams. Thus, the SEC retains its bias and favorship in the CFP. Making ESPNs viewership at the end of the season that much more highly anticipated/watched.

Summary: It's clear this is the SEC/ESPN's way of 'retaining' CFP power position. IF the B1G wants to maintain a competitive advantage, they'll need to poach. IF, however, the rest of CFB plays the SEC bluff and 'reconstitutes' the CFP, this will end very badly for the SEC. Especially, as scheduling in large conferences will limit cross conference games.

I REALLY hope that's the power move happening right now cause OK & TX are gonna take it on the chin if the CFP is reconstituted.

Bowlsby probably pitched the idea of PAC 20. If that happens, yay. Take it.

ACC probably won't cave on West Virginia unless the B1G expands.

If the PAC doesn't want any kind of expansion, the 8 stick together and add BYU & Cincinnati. Maybe we stop there. The more we expand, the more ways we're splitting a smaller pie.
