Bubu is a nice kid and has a great work ethic, but he is not the answer at point and I think there are better options moving forward that deserve a scholarship.

Just to throw a kink in everything, though, Jeff Hornacek was a walk on.

To earn a scholly as a walk on you must be better than a player they can recruit. Otherwise you don't deserve to get that schollarship. If we can get a better player than Bubu with the scholly then he does not deserve it. That is just how it is and how it works. Also Bubu can't have a schollarship until he is a junior anyway. I think he redshirted last year. So basically he can't have a schollarship unitl 2012. If we can't get a better player for that schollarship then maybe he deserves it and we are possibly screwed with not that many good recruits coming in.

For the type of offense Fred wants to run we don't need a center.

For the type of offense Fred wants to run, you need rebounds to get the break started, and you need to defend the post to force lower % mid-range and outside shots (as opposed to gimme's close to the baseket). Does ISU have players that can consistently do this in the Big 12? It doesn't look like it so far.

Completely agree. As much as it would be cool to give out any extra scholarships to new recruits, I think it sends a bad message when you don't reward the walk-ons in your program. I think long term it is more important for Fred to show potential future walk-ons that coming to ISU could be worth their while if they manage to play their way into the gameday rotation which is exactly what Bubu has done.
Unfortunately for Bubu next year we need inside help more.

Of course we don't at this point, but the poster is correct. We don't need centers in this offense to be successful. We need 2 to 3 6'8 PF's and we will be fine.

A Kelvin Cato type would thrive in this style of play. Two power forwards will do the trick but I bet Fred wouldn't mind having a 7 footer than can run the floor.

Still Think Godrey is going to mature and become a beast in the middle. He is just a project right now.

Yes, 2 or 3 is enough. I mean, no one ever gets in fould trouble or gets hurt. 3 guys can easily share the 80 minutes that's needed for two guys on the court at the same time in the 4/5 positions...

You need at atleast 4 PF/C's in college ball preferably 5. We're unfortuantely going to have a long year in the big 12 due to the fact we just don't have the bodies to go 40 minutes in a game.

No I didn't mean it that way. I've heard a lot and don't know what to believe. Nobody from the program has talked about it so I can't say either way. I don't like to jump on stories about a young man's academics if I don't have to.

If you went to last Thursday's cyclone luncheon,
Fred said Phillips had a paper to finish and thats why he didn't go to the UNI game.

No one was able to ask any questions that day as Fred talked the whole time about how he got to this point in his career and brought up the subject of Phillips himself.

I don't think Bubu has really played his way into the gameday rotation. Don't get me wrong, I love Bubu and everything he is doing for our program right now. But he's playing because we don't have anyone else that can play. If Allen and Babb were eligible this year hes probably only seeing slop minutes at the end of blowouts. And long term I think it is more important for Fred to get top recruits here than showing walk-ons that they have the potential to be contributers. One in 1000 walk-ons turn into great players. You have a much better potential with top recruits.

AGree, while I like what Bubu is doing, I suspect he will see very little time next year with a very talented group in front of him. This year we don't have the depth and so he contributes valuable minutes. I suspect he will get exposed in the Big 12 this year

I feel like Dendy would have been a natural fit with this system and put up some pretty good numbers. Too bad he's such a head case.

He has been exposed nearly every game now. But yeah, your point is well made. I view him pretty much as Cam Lee. Nice walk on that does enough to earn a few times on the court.

Are you Bubu's relative? You've been hyping him since he was in 3rd grade!
No just a Cyclone with some Ames High ties.

If we lose games because we don't have Bubu Palo, a guard that can't score, then we're in bad shape next year. REAL bad shape.
I bet you and many others said the same thing about DG last year. Fred and his staff need to coach him up like they did DG only better because they have more time to work with him.

I agree if there is a better guy out there go get him but if they have marginal academics and are "raw" I hope we go with Bubu, he is going to develop into an above average Big 12 guard in my opinion and is not an academic risk. Please explain the no scholarship until 2012 thing.

If we don't give Bubu a scholarship, somebody else will.
I don't think we should put a guy on scholarship for that reason

IMHO Bubu earns a schollie if he's in the rotation next year. We have 3 PGs coming in next year, if he can beat 2 of them out at least one will leave and the situation will solve itself. It's just my opinion but most athletes aren't willing to wait if playingtime looks that far away.
