Possible candidates for ISU's open OC position...

I still like the idea of bringing in a coach from a lower level school (FCS, Div II, etc...). It would be a step up for them to come to ISU and they probably won't be trying to move on anytime soon.

I want a good solid candidate and have said that I really like Dave Schramm. Good solid OC candidate with experience and success. Or someone like Christensen......another good solid OC candidate with experience and success. I don't want Mangino.....who IMO would get more publicity....but be more of what you are describing. And a guy who obviously would be using ISU as a means to resurrect his own coaching career.

I like Schramm and Christensen and think both would be great hires. I want ISU to be successful. I want the guy to be in Ames long enough to ensure that the level of offensive success can be sustained after they leave. That is the point I'm trying to drive home. I want ISU to find a new level of success only to be back down like this past year a season or two after they leave. Like on D, I hope Shane is set to take over for Wally when he wants to retire. I hope Shane can maintain the level of success that we have seen from the D over that entire 5 years and hopefully puts his own stamp on it. Maybe take the D to another level because of better recruits or figures a way to put some blitz packages together.

The news that Bleil is seeking the UND job is actually good news IMO. It has been suggested that he has kept his job because he is a close personal friend of CPR. In all likelihood he may have been told to find something else because no one is going to get a pass. Everyone will be evaluated. CPR knows that he is at a crossroads right now. He elevated Messingham and Mess did not pan out. That cost CPR in terms of building this program and also in his football capital with the Cyclone Nation. His job is not in danger but it certainly could be if he gets this hiring wrong. We can not afford to have another Messingham type hire. Which is one of the reasons why CPR will judge the candidates carefully and weigh out the positives and negatives. I have no doubts that the new OC will be better than Messingham. It is just a question of how much better. Actually there are lots of good candidates out there. IMO in addition to Schramm and Christensen there are a few others from outside the program that would be considered. And I expect both Klenakis and Sturdy to get consideration as well. Although I consider their applications may be unfairly impacted by the previous Messingham hire from within when Herman left. But it is all CPR's decision and he will be getting the rewards of a great hire or the harm from a bad hire with that decision.

Seriously? Any of these would be quite a gamble by Rhoads. I think he needs to make a hire that immediately passes the eye test of the fan base. He would have to be extremely confident and committed to hire a lesser-known and proven OC.

Sorry. But to be elevated from that level to a BCS school Offensive Coordinator position is no going to happen. No way and no how. We will get an OC that actually has Division I OC experience. You can bank on that. The names you are suggesting might be good but there is too much risk involved. Gotta go with someone who actually has experience being a Division I Offensive Coordinator and had success.

This is the risk. If Rhoads hires a well-known OC, then he gets the support of the fan base immediately. If he takes a chance, the fan base may withhold full support until they see results. It may not matter in the long-run, but it does in the short-run.

For example, I still think the hiring of Chizik led to a huge increase in support from the fan base. Fortunately, he left quickly and Rhoads has a surprisingly good first year to keep the support growing.

IMO, pretty much so. Probably out of the running for QB coach also IMO. For one thing, Sage was a pro QB but other than that do we know that he is a good teacher? And would he be able to teach within our Offense of the new Coordinator? That is why I would say that his hiring as the QB coach would be highly unlikely.

A buddy heard Eddie Gran as a possible candidate this morning (not that he's an insider, just something he'd heard and asked if I'd heard anything...) He's OC at Cincinnati now, likely coached w/ CPR at Auburn.

Edit: I had to go look, Cincinnati is having a pretty good season, currently 9-2 and playing Louisville tonight for the Keg of Nails for the last time (must be their rivalry trophy.) Looks like their offense ranks pretty high in passing, their defense isn't allowing many points. But then again, they play in the AAC, so that doesn't say a whole lot. Didn't have to play UCF this year either...
