A buddy heard Eddie Gran as a possible candidate this morning (not that he's an insider, just something he'd heard and asked if I'd heard anything...) He's OC at Cincinnati now, likely coached w/ CPR at Auburn.

Eddie Gran Bio - GoBEARCATS.com - The Official Athletics Website of the University of Cincinnati

Edit: I had to go look, Cincinnati is having a pretty good season, currently 9-2 and playing Louisville tonight for the Keg of Nails for the last time (must be their rivalry trophy.) Looks like their offense ranks pretty high in passing, their defense isn't allowing many points. But then again, they play in the AAC, so that doesn't say a whole lot. Didn't have to play UCF this year either...

He was one guy many hoped would be a part of the original staff. If we could get him (the only RB coach I consider better than Tony Alford) it would be better than I expected! He would be a great hire!

Hiring him gives you QB coach flexibility, 1) Sturdy could move there and you hire another mercenary recruiter at WR (not Todd Blythe- not enough relationships outside of Iowa) 2) you could bring in a novice (Sage, AF or other) at QB coach or 3) you still look for a polished old pro to tutor your QB's.

The news that Bleil is seeking the UND job is actually good news IMO. It has been suggested that he has kept his job because he is a close personal friend of CPR. In all likelihood he may have been told to find something else because no one is going to get a pass. Everyone will be evaluated. CPR knows that he is at a crossroads right now. He elevated Messingham and Mess did not pan out. That cost CPR in terms of building this program and also in his football capital with the Cyclone Nation. His job is not in danger but it certainly could be if he gets this hiring wrong. We can not afford to have another Messingham type hire. Which is one of the reasons why CPR will judge the candidates carefully and weigh out the positives and negatives. I have no doubts that the new OC will be better than Messingham. It is just a question of how much better. Actually there are lots of good candidates out there. IMO in addition to Schramm and Christensen there are a few others from outside the program that would be considered. And I expect both Klenakis and Sturdy to get consideration as well. Although I consider their applications may be unfairly impacted by the previous Messingham hire from within when Herman left. But it is all CPR's decision and he will be getting the rewards of a great hire or the harm from a bad hire with that decision.

This fits our old offensive scheme...

Something to consider, this isn't a make it or break it hire for CPR and his job isn't on the line. He just signed a 10yr/$20M extension that takes him through to 2022. This is a Ferentz type of deal that ensures CPR will be around for years to come no matter what because if Iowa can't afford to buy out Ferentz, then ISU certainly doesn't have the money. So, this hire isn't make it or break it. It could break support that CPR has built for the program over the last 5 years for a while, but he would have time to rebuild it again (like Ferentz this year, again, at Iowa).

I don't CPR to get this hire wrong. There is a lot of young talent on the this side of the ball to just simply waste it on a bad hirer.

His job might not be in immediate jeopardy, but 6+ years is a long time if fans decide they are tired of showing up to watch **** football.

His buyout is not the full amount of the contract. I believe we would be on the hook for something like 6 million to him.

The buyout is $750,000 times the number of years left on the contract. I believe it runs through or up to 2022. So as of right now the buyout would be $6 million and would go down $750,000 per year going forward.

Interested to know more about your excitement. Looks like he has a great position coaching history, and a good recruiter, but what about his OC style? He has Special Team Coordinator history, and 1 season of OC at Cincy.

I'll be watching tonight (and cheering for Cincy anyway).

KC media reporting the KU has hired John Reagan, OC/RB Coach at Rice, to be co-OC and OL coach at KU.

Weis had served as his own OC the first two years, but will now share duties. KU's OL coach, Tim Grunhard (ex-ND and ex-NFL Chief) stepped down as OL coach following this year.

I like Christiansen and Franklin most of all. I'm wondering if CPR isn't interviewing both on his "recruiting" trip this week (isn't part of the trip to the WC?). Do either of them have any history with Coach K or Sturdy? If so, I would think that CPR would be leaning that way.

Given what's happened during the last 5 years, I'm thinking/hoping that CPR now has a better feel for the caliber of staff he needs for the offense and can lock up someone who will impact the offense like Wally has the defense. I'm now re-envigorated about ISU FB after the two season-ending Ws, after seeing a RFr QB who showed solid signs of the "light turning on" in the last game (bringing the team back from such a huge deficit in a known hostile away game setting in testy weather is very impressive, IMO!).

Better get your season tickets now folks!! :)

Franklin makes about $550,000 per year with a hefty buyout and retention bonuses. i.e. It ain't happening. Christensen I think is possible.

This and I believe that KF was such a hot name when he came back to Iowa that he got pretty much his entire contract guaranteed if he was bought out, right? And he makes twice what Rhoads makes. So it would be much much easier for us to buy out Rhoads.

Rhoads has a long leash, but he doesn't have 8 more years if he doesn't meet expectations.

That being said I think there is no doubt he is the guy and I expect him to get it done sooner than later.

My personal opinion is that it is highly unlikely that Eddie Gran would come to Iowa State. For 26+years, Gran is one of the most respected position coaches (RB) in college football. Finally, (not even 12 monthes ago) he gets his first shot at being a OC. He assembled a staff of position coaches. He is in the process of completing his first season as an OC, and somehow, people think he would abandon Cincinnati and come here. I don't think so..................

Slight change from the topic dealing with a OC.

Taking the personal stuff out of the thought process for a minute and dealing with a new QB coach. Here is what I see as being a successful QB coach.

1) Techniques of the QB position.
2) Good recruiter.
3) A players coach.
4) Passion for the team and school.

For #1, I believe Sage is by far the best person for knowledge of the QB position since he played it at the highest levels for x12 years and is a smart guy. He is hands down the best experiece of anybody mentioned.
For #2, Sage is a unknown here.
For #3, Sage is a unknown here.
For #4, Sage is #1 for ISU and has a unknown on his passion for coaching.

I would take a chance on Sage for the QB position and his knowlwdge of the game and I assume he would excell at the others. I wouldn't be scared to hire Flynn here as well for the same reasons listed above.

The OC is a different animal and we must trust CPR on that one.

If Christensen doesn't want to come to Iowa State, then I wouldn't mind seeing the Iowa Western coach get a chance.

He certainly is an intriguing choice. What Strohmeier has accomplished at Iowa Western is unbelievable. He is a rising star. No doubt.
