My hope is that experience will win out. Purdue plays just one senior in Albrecht off the bench, and over the past 3 years, they have won a total of 4 conference tournament and NCAA tournament games combined. Meanwhile, we know what these seniors have done for ISU. Sometimes in an even matchup, those are the things that prevail.

I'm just hoping that when we double Swanigan on the block, that we bring somebody from the back side. Last night Vermont had guys dive down which led to an easy pass for an open three. We have to catch him off guard a little and hope to force some turnovers.

We need to shoot better from 3, because the shots are going to be there. Pushing it in transition should be really important. There were numerous times Vermont got a layup because Purdue didn't get back.

Some surprising things to me:

For as big as they are, they don't block many shots. Swanigan and Haas both have 27 blocks. That's only 4 more than Solomon Young in his limited minutes this season. Comparably, Burton has 48.

I know there's the whole "Woodbury Effect" where altering shots is more than blocking shots, but I don't think we can completely abandon hope of guards finishing in the paint.

They really don't foul much at all, actually less than Iowa St. They've given up the 6th fewest free throws in the country.
Swanigan averages just under 3 per game, and has only fouled out of 5 games. Purdue is 3-2 in those games. Haas has not fouled out of any games, but he also only averages 19 minutes per game.

Purdue obviously has a distinct size advantage down low, their guards like to push the ball up in transition, and they are a great 3 pt shooting team.

On the flipside it seems like they have a tendency to turn the ball over, they are sometimes slow to defend in transition, especially the bigs, and they aren't great at defending the 3 pt line. They are also a great FT shooting team, but yesterday against Vermont even their best shooters struggled mightily in trying to put the game away, when it gets to crunch time I like our advantage in terms of confidence and will to win.

I think matchup wise, it's not as bad as it looks for us on paper, and I'd even say they are a pretty good matchup from an Iowa State perspective. Swanigan is a beast and will get his, their guards will make some 3's, but I think overall will struggle with our guard defense from Naz, Morris, and Thomas.

IMO the key to the game is really Burton vs Vince Edwards, and how our bench performs vs theirs. If Burton can at least be a wash against Edwards and Bowie, Jackson, and Babb can keep contributing quality minutes, I think we can come out with a victory.

Nice Iowa quote, " ... and nobody left in the state penetentuary to offer a pardon and a scholly.Lots of future food servers, janitors and felons on this team."
Bowie, Naz, Holden all have degrees. Burton, Thomas, and I think Morris are all on pace to graduate this spring. So, yeah, "penetentuary" what ever in the **** that is.
Iowa fans have no room to talk. After all, their best player got a DUI on a moped! I still laugh whenever I think about this.

I'd rather just ignore the Hawk trolls. No need to bring them into this. Maybe someday they will be back at the adult table, and then they can talk.

You're right. I just thought that one was extra trolly. Actually kind of racist the way I read it. Because most of our players are not goofy farm boys from Iowa that makes them all felons? This group of seniors are some of the highest character athletes any school has seen in a long time. They are young kids that like to have fun but they are very conscious of the fact that are representing a university and a fan base and they do it with class.

That's really sad and pathetic. I could only read that trash so far, but it seemed like the Purdue fans all had intelligent, thoughtful insight on the game Saturday. Then the trailer Hoks showed up, and well...

You just have to love the Hawkeye hypocrisy. I've been watching the NCAA wrestling a bit, and Iowa fans absolutely LOVE how confident, cocky, arrogant, and talkative their coaches and wrestlers are. And you know what, it doesn't really bother me that much because in any kind of competition I think you have to be very confident in your abilities, especially if it gives you that "edge" you need to perform to your best. I think ISU wrestlers need a lot more of that attitude.

But when ISU basketball players are confident, cocky, talkative.... Hawk fans say they are a bunch of thugs. None of these Hawk fans have ever even met any of these ISU players or they would never call them that. They are all a great bunch of guys, many who have been through WAY more than anyone their age should ever have to deal with.

Lot of Iowa talk in this thread.

Your team is playing for a 3rd Sweet 16 berth in 4 years and you are concerned with what idiotic Iowa fans are saying on a Purdue message board?

Doesnt make sense to me.

Welcome to the internet.

Our fans should be game planning for Purdue. I guess we're probably going to lose since we're focused on comments from Iowa fans. Damn...

Next up: Purdue

I admit, I don't know a lot about them. What I do know is that, at least according to my Purdue friend, that they don't do well against good, athletic guards. They have a big center, Haas, who is 7'2" and near 300 lbs. He is not very athletic though - at least for a high major program. Not sure how we match up with him but I see he averages less than a block per game which doesn't make me afraid yet. I am more worried about Caleb Swanigan - 6'9" and 250 - averaging 18.5 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. Seems like he would be the key for us to stop.

Anybody have good insight into Purdue?

By the way, it's pretty funny reading the Purdue forums. There are a few Iowa fans basking in the glory of Iowa beating ISU earlier this year. It's kind of funny how they think ISU is the exact same team back then as the team that's won 11 of their last 13 games.
I was at the Purdue and Iowa State games yesterday. Haas isn't much, no offensive skill and other than being tall is a liability on defense. Swanigan is a beast, will have our work cut out with him.

I think they are a good match up for us.if we can get out into transition at all I think we can win. They are very big, but pretty slow. The giant guy, Haas is a huge stiff . Swannigan is really good, no doubt a top 10 NBA draft pick. He will get his points and rebounds. The key will to shut the others down. I think we will Have a huge advantage in guard court. Probably need to hit threes to win. They shoot the three fairly well, but not a lot of quickness. Clones 83, purdue 76.
I think you're spot on. Michigan beat PU with small ball and we need to do the same.

I wouldn't discount Haas. The mins I watch he was dominating. If he got the ball down low they couldn't stop him. He'd either score or get fouled and he made the FT's.
