My wife and I have gone jogging while our daughter goes to soccer practice. Last week, we came across a skunk about 20 feet from us (we turned that jog into a sprint really fast), and then last night we came across 8 deer about 30 yards away. Two of the deer leaped as they ran away and I swear their hooves were a solid 8 feet off the ground. It was cool to see close up.
I remember years ago I was riding with my brother and we were going way too fast on a rural NE Iowa county road. A deer popped out of nowhere and we just about hit it on the front driver's side. It jumped as it bounded away and the hind hooves came within inches of hitting the top of the windshield on the passenger side right in front of me. It was amazing but I just about crapped myself.
About 15 years ago Mrs. Velo and I were on a bike ride on a country county road in NW Iowa. We had a deer cross the road about 10 feet in front of us as we were cooking along at about 20. I thought for sure it was going to take one of us out.
We actually did hit a deer on I-35 in northern Iowa about 4 or 5 years ago. About two weeks later my son came home with a 6 page book that he wrote and his teacher helped him illustrate about the occurrence. It was pretty cute.
Yes, I have a lot of incidents with deer...
