Not exactly sure.
I need to know to if you have gotten this message before:

Dear CycloneErik,

Wow, what more can I say? The way you make history come alive is incredible. Some professors can really drone on and on, but not you! I could listen to you lecture about the Louisiana Purchase for eight days a week. Every class I was simply enthralled by your love of history, and I could feel the passion radiate from you when you stand in front of the class. Thanks for being the single greatest professor I have ever had.

Sincerely,
Student sitting in row 3, seat 7
More common would be, you keep forgetting to zip your fly up and it's getting old.

Update: MIL took FIL to urgent care. X-Rays came back negative but was directed to follow up with his GP tomorrow and referred to a podiatrist. Chances he does either...less than 30%.

Had dinner at my parents. They made pot roast. Amazes us how they overcook beef and think it is good. I had to drink a lot of milk to down my two slices. MrsWx decided we would have them over and make it sometime to show them what it should be like.

Back to work tomorrow. It was year end for us last week which was a horrible week for me to miss so I anticipate spending most of the morning with my coworkers trying to figure out where all of my stuff sits.

That was the one thing my mom could do well cooking, pot roast in the cast iron dutch oven with potatoes and carrots. Was always tender and juicy hardy midwest fare.

I used to have a roommate who fancied himself as some kind of great cook. Everything he made was over cooked shoe leather. The worst was a big northern pike he cooked to death. Seriously, pike ain't supposed to be dried out and chewy. It's supposed to just flake off with a fork. God, still remember how awful that was...maybe the worst thing I have ever eaten.

Totally. Might make their day.

The only way I'd say no would be for odd circumstances, like:

1. "I'm just writing today to say that my anonymous eval remarks were too kind. You suck and fail in every way."

2. "Thanks for your class. I met my meth connection and tons of chicks. Thanks dude."
Or I guess if they're in the middle of grading your class and it isn't blind grading

Is it appropriate to email a professor and tell them how valuable you found their class?

I would think it would be fine. If it was me I would enjoy getting positive feedback from a former student.

Here at ISU, the evals don't reach the profs/instructors/TAs until a day or two after grade reports reach students.
Then it's presented to us as a compiled PDF document. It'll show the # of 5s, 4s, 3s, 2s, and 1s for each question, along with a bar graph and the average for each question.

The comments are compiled into one mass section. For example, every answer people put under "What did you like most about this course" are loaded into one anonymous section, and the same for each of the questions.

I had one student who signed her initials after writing "You're doing great. Keep it up!" She had an A anyway.

By the time we see that, students have grades and we're locked out from the computerized grading system. To make an adjustment, we would have to do a little paperwork and gather a signature or two.

With all that in mind, I tell students just to answer honestly, whether it's one of the fun answers from this thread (which sound like things I made up before) or something like "I felt a little piece of my soul die every time that fool opened his mouth. If he's paid by the word, reduce the rate and then maybe he'll finally shut up." We really don't have strong retaliation options.

I had a friend in college that was married, and his wife was due with their first child right around spring finals. (On a trimester system back then) I saw him (jokingly) scold his wife's belly, pointed finger and all, saying "You'd better stay in their until after finals, or I swear, you're grounded for life!" She waited until break...just for him. ;)

And now, the realization of just how old that child is now.:eek:

Edit: "She" being the baby...the baby "waited".

This is the most rock'n flute in history.....surpassing Jethro Tull and Marshall Tucker Band. I have learned that people either get DMB Lie in our Graves.....or they do not. The most under-rated anthem in Rock History....regardless of jam instrument.

This is GREAT...Will be playing at the Bowl Tailgater........

Oh yeah, I wasn't thinking about evals, I was thinking about someone sending an actual email

Second faucet's handle was also shot. Wife said they need to be replaced before new owners move in. Went to Lowes, bought two new faucets, and will install them tomorrow. Wife asked if we needed to get a plumber to install them and I just laughed. They cost me $59 a piece and I can install them myself. I don't even want to think what a plumber would charge.
