First off, early season rankings don’t matter. Second off,

^^^ This guy gets it. Campbell is perfectly content just barely beating FCS teams if it means we don’t give away our playbook and get the win. It’s incredibly frustrating as fans but trust the process.
There is vanilla basic play to limit clusters of turnovers, etc, but the plan would never to be 'just barely beating,' (i.e. within one score down the stretch) FCS teams.

I do think it was interesting that we stayed with that style and ground to a win. I heard somewhere (CF podcast maybe) that staying with the basic plan would reduce the risk of us having a couple of late turnovers which actually could have cost us the game.

One of my all-time favorite coaches would have loved this game! I hope Gene Stallings was watching on ESPN + down on his ranch in Texas.

I would speculate that Campbell likes to challenge his team to beat the other team by executing the base offense and defense. The team gains confidence, sharpens their execution, and establishes an identity. Then when needed, they can run plays counter to their identity. It reminds me of how one guy described high level poker. CMC would say they didn't beat UNI by more because they didn't execute as well as they could have.

A lot of teams behind us have struggled or lost to unranked teams. If we play the way that we're capable, everything is still on the table.
