Re: Rashad Vaughn

I really, really want Vaughn. But the one thing that will make it a tiny bit easier if we don't get him is that he doesn't necessarily come from a winning program. His high school program isn't that great and it doesn't seem like he is on a great AAU team.

Niang barely ever lost in high school or AAU and Morris and Custer don't lose a lot either.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I am no insider; I just rub elbows with insiders. Before the story broke I told peteypie and one other person that Vaughn almost committed, but his parents made him stop. Not because they are leary, but because they want him to stick to an already scripted plan. Low and behold 2 weeks later a story comes out caughn almost committed to unc... tifwiw but that wasnt the only time a said something regarding vaughns recruitment, and have it verified by a story on it shortly after.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Rashad played against pinson today; I dont know all the stats, but his shooting was 7-16 22 pts; pinson was 7-18, 17 points, 5 assist , 2 blocks, and 2 turnovers... vaughn had kind of a rough weekend, but ended it well: pinsons team won, but that is because they are just the more talented team.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

So I've read that Roy tried to push for RV to commit by saying that there was only one spot open for he or Pinson. Of course everyone responds that if RV still wants to go to UNC there will still be a spot. Obviously, you make room for great players like RV... but has anybody considered the fact that such a tactic might be a little offputting to a recruit?

Knowing you're potentialy future coach is trying to 'play you' and use scare tactics to commit early? That would kinda tick me off.

"If Bobby commits before you, your offer might not still be there. Do you want to commit now?"

[weeks later]

"Hey, I'm sure you saw the Bobby committed. Just wanted you to know that you're offer is still there. I was just trying to rush you into a decision you weren't ready for at the time because that's the kind of coach I am. Soooo, yeah, call me... offer's still on the table... hello??? are you there??? Please, pick up the phone... it was just little white lie... don't be mad... I'm sorry. But seriously... I'm Roy. Pick me. Thanks. Bye... hello? Oh, sorry, thought that might have been you picking up the phone. Guess not. Okay. Call me!"

Yes he did push for a commit... and yes vaughn almost committed, but that is where your knowledge stops. We were recruiting Jahlil Okafor pretty heavily. Since he is tied to the hip with Tyus Jones (excellent pg) he has really cooled on unc. So unc started recruiting for more wings ; this is not new news. Yes Roy still talks to Vaughn his parents are coming to chapel hill sometime in june. On vaughns first visit roy told him it was first come first serve on the scholarship. Before pinson committed he told all the wings we are recruiting that there are 2 spots now open. Pinson decided to commit. It caught everyone by surprise even the coaches. We were all certain he was going to indiana. There is one more slot, and it's Vaughns if he wants it. We do have offers out to other top prospects though including Booker, Winslow (unlikely), and Russell. We are looking at Jalen Lindsey, and Ahmad Hill. Vaughn is who we want, but I am not nieve to think that the Pinson commitment won't factor into his decision.

Oh, I know that I have no idea how it all went/goes down for these types of things. And I'm not saying that things don't change and that something else could happen to free up another spot or change recruiting priorities. (And the bottom half of my post was just to add a little humor to it).

But my point remains... if I'm a top 10 recruit in the nation and a coach tells me that my spot might not be open if I don't commit right away, it'd put a thought in the back of my mind. "Really, if I want to take my time to make the right decision, you're going to lie to me to try to get me to commit right now?"

RV knows he's the type of talent you don't tell, "We don't have room for you anymore."

And this isn't anything against Roy, as I know lots of coaches say this kind of thing. It's just if it were me, I'd like my coach to always be honest with me and not play games like that.

That is how I would take it as well.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I think more likely to work in our favor is distance and the lack of wing players that RV would have to compete with. At UNC there will be serious competition for him to start. At ISU he's almost a lock to work into a starting role.

If he decides to go to the prep route, then it's almost a certainty that he won't come to ISU, IMO

Except Roy did indeed contact all the recruits and let them know that he is indeeed now looking for 2 more wings. I know Vaughn is a top 10 talent, but lets be for real this is UNC. We have 3 of the top 15 prospects for 2014 already. So yes they have the leverage to say "hey you can wait, but if you wait to long the scholarship could be gone when your ready." I see nothing wrong with letting a recruit know that. This past cycle Roy got burned by holding out on offering players who would have chosen unc like frazier. It's more likely a case of I won't get burned like this again. Troy Williams, and Noah Vonleh both burned Roy this way. If your a college bball power like unc, ku etc then you can afford to tell a recruit we need an answer sooner rather than later. Jmho

Re: Rashad Vaughn

The more ol' Roy plays around, the less attractive it will look to Vaughn and his parents. And the better Fred looks!

Re: Rashad Vaughn

The whole thing is this. We were looking for a pg, a 2 guard, a 3 guard, and a 5. The only big man we wanted was okafor. Well Joel Berry committed to UNC; guess what Okafor wants to olay with Tyus Jones. So we are no longer recruiting him. Roy told all the wings we are now looking for 3 wings. Pinson committed, there is one spot left if Vaughn wants it, it is his. We can't just wait for him though. It is smart ro have a back up plan and a backup for that.

I'll agree with this. It's smart to use the positioning that you have in recruiting.
In Vaughn's shoes, I wouldn't want to hear it. In Roy's shoes, I wouldn't want to be caught by surprise, and I would want to stress the prestige of UNC's big name.

I don't have a problem with the idea, but I don't respond well to pressure sales.
That said, Roy won't be recruiting me anytime soon.
