Re: Rashad Vaughn

Eric Bossi of Rivals gives ISU and UNLV the edge in the Vaughn sweepstakes as of now. The last point in his mailbag.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Nothing we didn't know...

Now for the second part about where Vaughn lands up. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Minneapolis who is attending Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep for his senior season has been tough to pin down. He visited UNC in the spring but then postponed his official visit there last month and followed up by postponing an official visit to
Baylor. He has visits coming up to Iowa State and UNLV in the month of November and Kansas, Arizona and Minnesota are still involved. For now, if I had to handicap it I would say that the Cyclones and Rebels could hold a slight edge over the rest of the field. But, he won't be deciding until the spring so there is still lots of time for things to happen.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

'Zona got a Juco guard commitment, if Vaughn was still considering a vist there he may end up canceling.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

For the sake of discussion regarding UNLV, which is more more on track than Harrison Barnes, ESPN had 28 of their "experts" make their 2013-2014 NBA Rookie of the Year prediction/pick and only one chose Anthony Bennett.
2013-14 Rookie of the Year - ESPN

Although having Bennett drafted first is a selling point, it isn't necessarily a major selling point. Damian Lillard went to Weber State and he was drafted #6 in 2012. UNLV does not have an advantage over ISU when it comes to the NBA draft. The NBA GMs will find talented players no matter where they go to college.

If I'm a college kid I look at this way: UNLV has had the #1 pick in the draft recently and it was by the coach that will be coaching me. Iowa State has had one first round pick bust (obviously the bust isn;t ISU's fault). GM's will find talented players yes, but being able to dangle the "we had the #1 pick" argument is huge for UNLV whether you like to admit it or not. Furthermore, your argument that Bennet wasn't predicted to be a #1 pick makes UNLV look better as they "developed him into a #1 pick" in a short 12 month period, it doesn't weaken UNLV. Just saying

I'm going to get paid in two years no matter what school I choose. Whether I'm the first pick or the 15th pick.

Why not play for a coach i like, respect, and can learn from at the same time? My family and friends get to see me on TV if they can't make the games. The advantage ISU has is said games are not starting at 9:30 pm central time against Nevada.

I'm only going to be in college one flipping year. I'm from Minnesota. I understand how winter works.

I'm going to be a millionaire in two years no matter where I play my year of college ball. Why not play for a guy I like? Hoiberg anybody?

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Lol Bennett would have been drafted anywhere he went. He probably wouldn't have went #1 if another team had the top pick.

Babb likely wouldn't have made the Celtics as long as he did if he went to UNLV. Hoiberg can help get guys to the NBA as well as anyone else. If he gets an elite talent, they will go at the top of the draft.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I'm not saying Hoiberg cant get guys to the NBA. He definitely can and he definitely develops players in an extremely short amount of time. I think ISU has more advantages over UNLV---Big 12 competition, close to home, better academics, sold out crowds, better TV exposure, great facilities, Hoiberg and his NBA connections, etc.

I'm just saying lets not discredit UNLV and Bennet. He would of been picked high regardless but if Iowa State had a first round pick I would probably like to think Iowa State helped with that and it wasn't all the player that did it.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Top picks are top picks regardless of school. It's the other guys that get there by schools, coaches, and development.

Fred has had a small hand to work with, but he's gotten guys looks in the NBA and overseas that they likely wouldn't have gotten before.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

It comes down to Fred Hoiberg Vs. everyone elses coach. Urine idiot if you dont pick Fred. Nobody can offer what he can. While I doubt this will have much influence on top 20 recruits, it should def have an influence on 21-100 recruits. He can take those guys and put them in the NBA like no other coach can imo.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Here is the rivals profiles for the 5 guys who started for UNLV in their tournament game against Cal.

Khem Birch - Yahoo! Sports
Anthony Bennett - Yahoo! Sports
Anthony Marshall - Yahoo! Sports
Katin Reinhardt - Yahoo! Sports
I couldn't find a profile for their other starter, Bryce Dejean-Jones.

How far do you think Hoiberg goes in the tournament with that talent? Rice has not won a single NCAA tournament game as the coach of UNLV. If Vaughn wants a coach who will maximize his talent, then UNLV is not the place for him
