Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Sure but five years of independence (presumably for all sports) is a very real hurdle to go through to qualify. The likes of Miami are better off merging the ACC and B12 and engaging new TV partners (I.e. Paramount/Amazon) with rational realignment amongst those 33 schools and reducing the payout gap between them and B10/SEC.
I guarantee that there isn't a single ACC school on my list that would balk at that.

If the 19 team max goes through, I don't think a merger of the B12 and ACC will be allowed. I also don't think a shuffle of teams would be allowed either. Though it makes so much sense to swap SMU+Cal+Stanford with WVU+Cinci+UCF.

I think a mutually agreed to shuffle would be acceptable, and your proposal makes a ton of sense.

Weird and onerous conditions for additional ESPN/Fox brand consolidation:

Yea it makes no sense. Why would any conference want to be 19 teams? Unless #20 would be exception granted Notre Dame because they have been independent. And it also limits the Big 10 from further expansion beyond 1 team either to the SE or West Coast.

IMO there is something fishy with this information. Someone has an agenda. But then again, the post does say it's part of negotiations. And sides propose crazy things as a negotiating ploy. Could also be trying to sway certain votes, because I'm sure congress people in NC, VA, NC, SC, FL, etc. want to make sure their schools end up in conference (Big 10/SEC) that is most beneficial to their schools.

The numbers are already stupid from a competition standpoint. As I stated earlier, if this is part of negotiation it likely means that there are only a few schools outside of those conferences that those conferences want, and that cap locks them into maximum profitability, which the TV networks would support.

You can say "____ number doesn't work". Competitive balance and rational scheduling just doesn't matter anymore.

Can someone smarter than me explain all of this? It seems to me this bill won't change anything but rather ensures everything today stays the same.

But if the system is currently broken, how is this bill fixing anything?

It never was going to fix anything, it’s a govt bill. It’s gonna generate a ton of billable hours and things will be just slightly different then before with a minor change in favor of whoever spent the most money

Basically, they're going to get just enough anti-trust protection to enforce some kind of watered down transfer rule and everything else is going to remain exactly the same.

Which is funny because the transfer rule the P4 could agree to on their own very easily, they just need it to not be challenged. Whole lot of money and time for a very easy solution that any fan could have thought of

It won't really fix anything, it would just keep it from getting worse. That's how I see it.

If the SEC and Big 10 are capped at 19, it keeps the Big 12 and ACC at least allowed in the game instead of a formal breakaway that takes, say 48 teams and separates ISU from every school we've ever given a hoot about playing. To me, that's a pretty big win.

CyHawk would still likely be played, and we'd stay in a league with the Kansas schools, OK State, and Colorado. I can enjoy that as a fan.

My nightmare is something like the Big 10 and SEC each going to 24, and taking KU, OK State, CU, KSU and leaving us behind as the biggest school playing G6 schools that we have no history with in a very literal 2nd tier, as opposed to what exists today (participating at the highest level against most of our historic rivals with a financial disadvantage).

I’ve talked about it for awhile but I honestly don’t see the desire of the big ten to expand more unless it was ND.

It’s not like adding Virginia or UNC is going to get anyone excited and there’s really no reason to continue to expand

The university presidents want the academic profiles under their banner, especially UVA.

Ehhh that’s hit enough for athletic expansion or they would have just grabbed Stanford and Cal. But different as it’s new states but you don’t expand the AD just for the academics, the academics are just the cherry on top, maybe the sprinkles too

If it makes them money, they'll do it.

It's not like the Big 12 schools that they've had multiple chances to take, the ACC schools haven't been available since right after they took Maryland.

A merger without expansion of the existing 33 would likely be permitted. And it should be permitted giving PCSA media rights pooling provisions and rational realignment into 3 11-team conferences. Add in unequal revenue sharing based on TV ratings/CFP success and deeper pocketed new TV partners (that should also legally have access to CFP rights), you got a situation where Miami FL approaches B10/SEC payouts and they don't have to go through independence hell for 5 years.

And it's no secret amongst most UNC higher ups that they would prefer restoration of a downsized ACC if the payouts approach those of the B10/SEC. And one can assume they don't want to screw with being an indy for five years.

It depends on the money but I don’t think they add lot of value. Oregon and Washington couldn’t even move the needle enough to get a full share. Virginia is like Cal in that it just doesn’t care about athletics and UNC is very quickly becoming irrelevant not just in football but in basketball. Also I don’t think you get UNC without Duke which is kinda a non starter.

There really isn’t a reason to add them

Disagree on that. That is a highly onerous penalty on several counts (media payout cuts, exit fees, finding teams to play for all sports, etc.) over 5 years.

A B12/ACC merger with realignment into 3 conferences would be a more favorable solution both financially and competitively.

Not really, House will be codified as well which also enable enforcement of it with subpoena power. And the pooling provisions will enable more market negotiating leverage for the B12, especially if they pool with the ACC (at a minimum).

It's not up to you, it's up to Fox. If Fox tells the Big 10 Presidents to do it, they'll do it. If they don't, they won't.

It's that simple.

Again, it’s not up to Fox. It’s up to the universities. If the universities don’t see the value they won’t do it. They already get pushback from AD’s and fans about the last expansion, adding two more nothing programs would have to come with a massive financial gain that they couldn’t get otherwise
