I posted earlier that when the University of Iowa's Ath Dept starts pulling in $100 million/yr while the rest of the University is forced to make cuts due to the continued decline in state appropriations, it's going to get really heated.

The Ath Dept doesn't exist without the University, so I don't think there's any way Iowa's Ath Dept will be able to avoid subsidizing the rest of the University.

Might not be direct, but I'm sure they'll be encouraged to do things like build a new dorm that will house athletes as well as a bunch of students.

If the Pac deal is $30M per, we know some teams are worth more (UO, UW) and others less (WSU, OSU). But how much more, and what about the teams in the middle? If Utah or Arizona was worth the average, that's less than Big12 (theoretical) $37M. But maybe being in a different conference, accessing another late night window, putting them in earlier windows as well, having the Holy War be an annual event... might change their value upwards to be in Big12 and increase the value of Big12 games at the same time. Maybe- only the TV people know for sure.
I would think that Oregon and Washington are worth around than $50M. Then Arizona State & Utah are worth $40M+.

After that it gets a bit sketchy with CU probably around $30M. Arizona around $25M.

Stanford & Cal probably aren't worth much to Big12 vs Big10 which gets carriage fees for the BTN.

But in the end, a 16-20 team conference might be worth more to a TV partner than separate conferences or the top 12 schools. Having games in 4 time zones that span East to West coast might have a lot of value to a media partner to combat ESPN & Fox's inventory.

CBS & NBC appetite for content will obviously play a big part in Big12 media rights $.

They’ve had an uptick in recruiting classes and Schiano is a good coach who has done it before. They have already improved drastically since he got there.

They went from 3-6 to 5-8 and when he did it last they were in the Big East. They went 2-7 in the Big 10 and only beat bad Illinois and Indiana teams. Again, I'll have to see it to believe it.

Schiano's also a ticking time bomb. There's a pretty good chance that Rutgers' liability insurance rates increased simply by hiring him.

They haven't beat a team with a winning record yet. Their fate also rests in the hands of the Big 10 in how they split up the conference. If they're stuck in the east again or something similar they have very little chance of being good.

"We're not done expanding" is death blow to Pac and ACC if they were holding onto any fantasy that they wouldn't have further defections.

Big 12 is very possibly the best collection of teams that have already been passed over. If it was gonna be KU it would've happened several times already.

Thanks for posting.
Couple of notes:
The media deal the PAC10 gets would likely forced to include an out clause for Stanford, Ore, Wash for them to sign. Big 12 should act now and take Pac 12 schools.
Yeah the language in that article is damming:

“There is already word circulating that the Pac-12 -- in the middle of its own media rights negotiations -- might have to agree to a media rights contract that allows Cal, Oregon Stanford and Washington an "out" if approached by another conference.”

The other issue for them, uneven revenue distribution.

“They have plenty of leverage. That has led to speculation Oregon and Washington could agree to stay in a reconstituted Pac-12 with an uneven revenue distribution paying the Ducks and Huskies more than other programs. If the pair make that demand, what option would commissioner George Kliavkoff have to consider?”

Big ten is heavily pursuing UW,OU, CAL, Stanford to own that “late night window”. The PAC was hinging their wagon to that big ten said hold my beer, it’s over PAC. PAC did bad business for a decade and that’s why it’s over.

just your typical 16 university 7 billion dollar non profit organization

move along everybody

The sickem365 people had someone on the other day that basically justified it like this:

Paraphrasing: "Your typical P5 university has 16 or more athletics programs. Only 2, of those make money and subsidize the other 14. In a for-profit business, typically you would cut those non-profitables entites out. However, the universities cannot for a variety of reasons, including title 9." - He said this is why they are likely to remain non-profits in the near future.

The CAL BOR just made it hard for CAL to do this now. They basically said that any future move by California institutions would have to be approved by the BOR. Also, they asked to "model a future where CAL goes to Division 3."

I don't think CAL is going to the Big 10. I could totally see Stanford moving though.

If Cal says no, Arizona is sitting right there.
