TLDR: Notre Dame is obvious. UNC, FSU, Oregon, and Washington are in the for sure group. Then Clemson, Miami, Stanford, Cal, and Utah are in the next group, followed by a large chunk of maybes. And Iowa State is the 10th worst P5 school on this list. There are 23 options before ISU.

In 20-30 years, American Football might not even still be a major sport to the majority of college football fans. At some point, the violence will kill the game, not to mention, the greed and gluttony today. I can see a day (long after I am gone) where soccer is the number one sport in the U.S. 'Twould be funny to see a school decide to become a soccer school NOW and use their football stadium for that, pump it up, get rolling and be ahead of the curve. MLS is doing that, and I believe that in 50 years, MLS will be one of the Premier Leagues in the world instead of a retirement plan for the great Euro players now. Long term thinking, I know, not what we are about!
I've had a lot of conversations about this. My oldest son plays soccer as his primary sport and just plays flag football. He's got one more year of flag until it's tackle only then he's out.
Here is my thing about football especially compared to soccer, basketball, wrestling, etc. You will always have lower income people with access to football as a way out. With the other sports, you need to start early and spend a lot of time (and probably money if you're following the normal path) to become a very good player.
Football, if you're a good athlete, can probably pick it up in high school and be pretty effective. You just can't start basketball as a 9th grader and be anything but total crap.

A few points of contention
1. ISU got a 0 for football history. I know our history is bad, but it isn't "tied with Vanderbilt" bad. Kansas, and KSU both rank higher than us.
2. The 3 in basketball is a joke for school that has won conf titles, tourney titles and advanced in the NCAA tournament. KSU got a 5 FFS.
3. If you knew how the US News college rankings are actually calculated, you wouldn't give it a 3x multiplier.

Pretty sure it was proactive/preemptive to avoid having the status taken away.
There are several NBA greats that didn't start playing until HS. Joel Embid and Dennis Rodmen off the top of my head but I know there are more. Also lower income people will have football cut first as outside of hockey and golf is the most expensive sport to play/support. That's why soccer is the most popular sport in the world. All you need is a ball (or some version of a ball) and you are good to go. Don't even need other people to practice against like in football.
I 100% agree basketball is too low but the football thing you are viewing as a fan. Also as has been pointed out many times while this board hates the US news rankings it is pretty much the gold standard people resort to even knowing its flaws.
Everyone is different sure but not knowing where a state is located on the map of the US is inexcusable. You don’t just forget that if you learned it. I can’t tell you the last time I looked at or even thought about the state of Idaho or New Mexico but it would take me 3 seconds at most to point them both out on a map.

I agree in principal. But in practice, in the US or at least in central iowa, playing soccer is way more expensive even than tackle football if you’re going to do it at a competitive level.
I think you could rename the divisions to non-geographical. they need to find a way to get NW to Great Lakes and take Notre Dame to the Great Plains
People can't get it... we were told either quit or get fired.

My reading comprehension and focus have bottomed out this week, so can somebody explain why ISU is only given credit for 3 NCAA championships?
I understand that part, but why let it lapse? We've been able to maintain that status for years? What marker or metric couldn't we hit?
They are weighting certain things like having a medical school far more importantly and we don't check those boxes obviously. Without huge new investments into certain areas, we no longer qualified in the current criteria, right or wrong.
I wouldn't say it was any sort of change with ISU Academics but rather a different focus on the part of AAU.
Fair point. To be great at soccer in the US you usually need to get on a real travel club which costs money where as almost all the football programs are run through the schools. At some point I do think those numbers shift as football is a very expensive sport for a school to run and the liability is quite a bit larger.
But we are just getting to the point where the demographic that kicked off the big decline in football participation are becoming decision makers in what media a household purchases. I do think it will be a long decline, but ultimately lower youth participation is going to slow fan growth.
Not that you had to play football to be a fan, but it certainly helps.
It was more to do with that then being outright dumped. ISU and the AAU have had a tight relationship for a long time, and there was definitely a path to ISU maintaining membership. That path simply is not financially lucrative to ISU vs the current research focuses, methods, and sponsors. The corporate sponsors are also looked down on by the AAU, which ISU has had to employ as a financial resource given the drying up of state funds.
I believe based on some things I was told that AAU membership became less important once the B1G dream was dashed by USC and UCLA reaching out to the B1G.
