Phil Nolan has released a final list of 5 schools. We are not listed. Not surprising - he's an interesting case... He's on his 4th HS in 4 years.

i'm under the assumption that after the elgin cook fiasco, we're stepping back from milwaukee and the associated hassles there. would love to get deonte burton but won't be surprised if he lands at marquette.

I doubt very much it is as simple as you characterize it. If we stopped recruiting an area everytime we get burned by a recruit, we would run out of places to recruit quickly. Coaches are smart enough to know that not every kid from the same town/ area has the same problems. Recruiting is fluid, and a crapshoot.

I attribute our (seemingly) waning interest in Milwaukee (if you can even call it that after 1.5 years) more on the fact that TJ seems to be doing a little less recruiting, and that Matt A., and Cornell M. have become the primary recruiters - and their sweet spots are NY region and MI.

Burton is and has been at Brewster. We'll get him, Samuel, and Sheppard.

Deonte Burton appears to be a bit of a Marquette lean at this point and keep in mind that we have actually yet to offer him (to my knowledge). He is rumored that he may make his college choice this Fall, thus I don't put Iowa State's potential very high on him.

Samuel & Sheppard are both good gets for the class; however if I had to use the 5 scholarships based on who we have interest in and who is showing interest is us right now our 2013 recruits would be:

Matt Thomas
Shamiek Sheppard
Terrence Samuel
Tyler Ennis
Jaylen Brantley

Do you know something that others don't? We have not even offered Burton as of my knowledge, you think we are in that good of a position that we can just offer in a week or so and he'll commit? Keep in mind that his latest plans are to commit this Fall...

How do you know we haven't offered yet? Just because Rivals says so? TJ has been on him since before high school. If he wants to commit, we'll take him.

Well because nobody has said so... I never said we wouldn't take him, I simply implied that based on current interest from both side he doesn't appear to be one of the top 5 for the class of 2013. That could easily change, he decides to take a visit later on this Fall and perhaps we offer while he is here. I don't know what his plans are just like no one else, all we are doing is speculating.

But, just as a reminder, I never said we wouldn't take him... I definitely believe if the opportunity is there he would be a great addition!!

I've been told for some time that Burton is ours to lose. The lack of an indicated offer confuses me as well. I'm going to take the positive attitude approach and assume he's ours to lose. I don't agree with the list that had Brantley on it. Too many guards. Yes, I know we will be guard heavy but that was to much for my blood.

My thoughts on Burton could be completley wrong but the poster above is correct, TJ has been on him for years.

Not much info gets out about Burton. Evenfor other suitors. This Marquette visit is the most info about him in a while. But, every few months, a small bit of info leaks out saying who has been in touch with him. We were on th list at the beginning of July, and we were noted a few weeks ago.

Compare that with recruits like Ennis and Samuel who have "recruiting analysts" that are well connected to them - you get daily or weekly updates about interests, etc.

The person who told me wouldn't know about Burton for a fact. It's a strong opinion.

I would be a little more pessimistic if we were hearing reports about other schools, but not ISU. As it is, we rarely hear anything - therefore I think we have as much chance as anyone - if we can get a visit.

Agreed.

I would never under estimate how persuasive a 6 foot four inch shooting guard, and former NBA basketball player can be.

He played the shooting guard position.
He played well, for a well known team and was an excellent shooter.
He is respected by his peers in the NBA and was expected to become president of an NBA basketball team.
Didn't Fred write a book on shooting and playing the position?
Look what he did to help Diante in one year.

If you were a prospective high major basketball recruit, at the guard postion, why would you not consider playing for him?

GO CYCLONES:yes:

I was off the grid this past wknd, but got the Burton news right before I lost cell service. Sucks, but oh well - u win some, you lose some, and I'm sure that we were his 2nd choice. ;-)

Doi gather correctly that Brandon Spearman was also on campus this weekend? If I recall correctly, Spearman was a Dayton recruit (Mann connection) from Chicago area. He was decently rated in HS, did not have a lot of success at Dayton, announced a transfer to Indian Hills coincidentally after Mann took the ISU job.

Can anyone confirm? I saw him referenced in tweets, that is why I am wondering.
