I don't think players that go blue blood programs are so much forgotten as they are under-appreciated. Think about this: Harrison Barnes. Could have played 2 years at ISU, led the team in scoring, could have even been tops or near the top in all of NCAA (look who he would have been playing with at the time). He could have had an even bigger impact on ISU's turnaround. The 2011-12 season with Royce which got us back into the tourney for the first time in years could have been a Final 4 season for Iowa State, and fans would have remembered it always. He would have been a star.

Instead, he was just another face at UNC. He played rather passively in their offense, and no game that I watched did he ever really "take over". UNC was good while he was there, but never better than a Sweet 16 team. Players like this are a dime a dozen at UNC, and their fans watch players like Barnes leave their school wondering what the hype was all about. I'm not so much into the psychology of the sport, but sometimes I wonder if Harrison left a lot of potential unfulfilled when he left Ames to play for old man Roy.

Another thing to think about: Kentucky turns 3-5 players over to the NBA on a yearly basis, including 3 from this years NIT team. Do you think any one of those 3 guys who were all once top 50 recruits will be remembered by Kentucky fans 5-10 years from now? I have my doubts. Compare it to if they had chosen to play at Iowa State, Oregon State, or say Alabama? They would have been standouts, and idolized by their fans. That's all I think CyKings is trying to say.

Exactly.

Harrison Barnes started 73 of 75 games he played at UNC, was ACC Rookie of the Year, All-ACC 2nd team, All-ACC 1st team, had a 40 point game in the ACC tourney, played in the Elite 8 both years, was the 7th pick in the draft, averaged 16 and 6 in the playoffs last year for the Warriors ... you need to stop talking like HB was some kind of also-ran who UNC fans never even noticed.

Yes and if only he'd come to ISU it would have been a near certainty that his life would have been a fairytale filled with championships and rainbows and unicorns.

I understand the big fish, small pond marketing pitch (who wouldn't want Ames, Iowa as their kingdom???) but you are unfairly understating the success Barnes had at UNC.

Maybe to an extent, but I'm just trying to illustrate CyKings point. As talented as HB was, and is for that matter, he didn't truly shine at UNC. I remember the majority of his freshman year the media was asking questions like when is this guy going to explode? When are we going to see the best recruit live up to his name? His numbers were always good, but never glamorous. Without all the hype surrounding him coming out of HS, he might not have earned half of the honors you listed, and I think it has a lot to do with all of the talent surrounding him. I can't remember who all he played with in his UNC tenure, but a few names come to mind (Henson and Zeller are just 2 I can name off the top of my head) that were also NBA talents, and I know there were others. I just think he would have been much better suited for Big 12 ball, and much more appreciated by his home town fan base.

Don't have doubts, they've forgotten them already.

Also, UK, UNC, KU, Syracuse, L'ville.... Have enormous fanbases. 10x the number (or more) than ISU. Fans coast to coast. When we win a nat'l championship or two, we'll start to approach half that many fans.

Give it up.
Give what up, he didn't do crap at UNC, was drafted because he was a talented bball player, who could've been drafted at any college. After the stunt he pulled with the press conference, I FOR ONE AM GLAD HE DIDN'T WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP AT UNC....

Here's something we can be distracted by...

Eric Bossi had a little writeup about Custer last week.

Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting - Local star Stone shines at Summer Jam

When it comes to leading a team and elevating the play of his teammates, Iowa State commit Clayton Custer is one of the best in the country. The point guard is tough, makes the right play and his teammates on Team YOBO feed off of him. Cyclone fans will love him and he's made a pretty compelling case to be moved up when rankings are updated after the summer.

And he wouldn't of won **** here either with Greg ******* McDermott as his head coach. There's also a chance that if Barnes came here, McDermott would still be coaching at ISU.

It was best for all that Barnes went to UNC, let it ******* go.

#!*&^ Barnes. He used our facilities for years to get better and then spat in ISU's face. He is a traitor.

Just think if we had Bubu, Doug McD and HB on our team.
