I could easily argue the opposite that we were one or two freshman away in terms of helping out our lack of depth that year from winning quite a few more games. Don't you remember how many games we let slip away that year due to just barely running out of gas right at the end of the game? I'm not saying we would have been top half of the league, but one could easily argue we wouldn't have been last had we had a little more depth that year.
With this said, I'm going to apologize for getting off task. I usually go crazy in my mind when people ruin threads with pointless arguments and I just did that. Play on fellas.

Your problem is that you for some reason believe that they could have recruited 4 freshman that were good enough to contribute right away in the big 12 late in the spring signing period. That's just not going to happen. there aren't many good players left at that point, at least big 12 quality. The. You are left with McDermott quality recruits that either waste space on the bench or transfer and you are left having to fill those spots again. If they would have signed freshman I can almost guarantee you they wouldn't have made it to the tournament yet. Look at Iowa.

I don't feel good about where we are with Johnson. Seems like he loves Louisville with Macura it seems like Minnesota is his top choice. But if they happened to get Vaughn I don't care who else they get.

You obviously didn't read the whole string of posts when I said that I agreed Fred made the right decision.

Yeah, I could see us getting both Johnson and Vaughn, or striking out on all our top targets. Just have to wait and see.

I'm always a natural pessimist and am just assuming we aren't going to get any of them. This way I won't be disappointed if we don't and I'll be pleasantly surprised if we do get any of them. Its a much easier way to live for me.

Sheesh, 16-16 with Fred's first year group was one of the masterful coaching jobs in the entire nation.

Anytime you are talking about an in-state school you cannot just write it off... Most of them are kids who have grown up in the area and Minnesota is in the in-state school. Yes, Pitino needs to prove himself more this season, but keeping all of those recruits interested after the coaching change and more has to show you at least one thing. Pitino will be a good recruiter, just like his dad. If you've read any articles when recruits talk about Pitino they discuss how persistent he is, and as Iowa State fans we should now how important that is if you want to reel in big (or bigger) fish.

Minnesota will likely be in the final lists for many of those listed as attending this weekend and many more in the 2014-2015 classes that seem to be unusually loaded up north. Best you can hope for is Pitino stumbling this year and Minnesota's only noise is a big thud as they land on the bottom of the B1G. If they make some noise, even if it is middle of the road and NIT birth you can bet they will land at least one good name off that list.

He said he liked what hoiberg did, just that it sacrificed a little succes that first year. Both statements are true, he could of added 4 jucos and been a little deeper and better that 1st year but you are right had he done that we may still be waiting for the ncaa.

I could be wrong, but just the fact that Colson has Minnesota in his list (among the rest which look mostly like all eastern schools) probably says young Pitino has got it going as far as recruiting. Plus being around his Dad as much as he has, he probably knows plenty about all the reruiting ropes.

Agreed and being "the new regime" gives you a little added excitement for the first year or two. If he shows any signs of life, ala Fred in yr one, he may pick up some momentum up there.

It would have been nice to keep Tubby for another year or two

It's more fun with Tubby being at Texas Tech so we can see his face when we whoop them twice this year.

I would rather Get Macura and Johnson, than just Vaughn. Macura and Johnson are 3-4 year players. I would still be happy to just get Vaughn and not Macura/Johnson. Let's just get all three and win the championship though.

Vaughn has the potential to be a program changer. I get what you're saying though.

i don't think we have been paying much attention to Colson for awhile now. Custer is coming this weekend, but others to maybe watch for in the parking lots with Fred will be Trevor Manuel or Henry Elleson, both juniors who have indicated they want to visit sometime soon. Reid Travis will be at the Minnesota game tonight, not sure if he is still going to UCLA this weekend, so maybe he could show up in Ames? I suggest having your camera phones ready for when Fred goes around with recruits.

Travis Hines ‏@TravisHines21 13h RT @JucoRecruiting: Iowa State and Baylor are the latest schools to show interest in Lester Medford (5-11/PG/2014) of Indian Hills CC

Lester Medford Jr - Yahoo! Sports

Interesting that we are sniffing a juco PG. W/Morris & Custer already for 2014 and 2015 and the hard press for Johnson and now a juco pg makes me wonder if Hoiberg is toying with one of them at another SG or basically two points on the floor with different guys bringing it up. He did that with Bubu and lucious last year a lot and am sure will do that this year a lot with Bubu/monte/kane combos. Guess we can expect 3-4 guards on the floor pretty regularly if he gets a lot of these guys. I know 100 times more about football than basketball (other than I like watching it) But seems like if we do land a good forward/p forward too there will be a lot of different looks.
