No. Hallice Cooke was Pac-12 FOTY and definitely will be starting unless Thomas proves himself. So far Thomas hasn't impressed anyone. Hallice is a better scorer, dribbler, passer, defender, and finisher than Thomas right now. I hope MT proves that he's the better one this year because he certainly isn't right meow.

No he wasn't

Again, you are out of your mind.

I agree that Hallice has the potential to be very, very good, and I am hopeful that he is a key player in this year's run. I also think Matt will show great strides this year. There are plenty of minutes for both to be key contributors this year IMO, and even more next year.

He wasn't, but he as an honorable mention. He shot over 45% from 3 as a freshman... I'm not saying he is going to outgun Thomas, but he is going to push him. I think it comes down to how well he transitions from surgery. If he can knock off the rust then I think he will have the potential to start over Thomas. Likewise, I think he is a better dribbler and passer. It was mentioned that he was more of a combo guard than shooting guard in his recruitment which was a very attractive aspect of his game.

All in all, I can't say that he is a better player than Thomas, but he has the potential to be a very important piece of the puzzle if he can recover from his surgery. He scored double digits 10 times and had over 20 pts on two separate occasions. 45% as a freshman is nothing to shrug off either.

Right now we have a lineup of Morris (he will stay), Cooke (a player I think a lot of us are overlooking. He was the Pac-12 FOTY and will be great), Burton, and Malou, with the 5th spot up for grabs. I'm not sure how good Carter or Ernst will actually be, which is why my wish list is a big man since we really need one. If Thomas gets that 5th starting spot, that means we will have a tiny lineup. Who's our best option at PF or C that you guys think will be able to walk in and start in 2016-17? Since it looks like we are on the outside looking in with Curry, is Tyler Cook the only other big man we are really in the mix for right now?

Monte will not stay.

I'm really high on Cooke and thing he will be a good player for us but there is a big difference between honorable mention and player of the year so it needed to be corrected. Aaron Gordon was the 2014 Pac 12 FOTY

I have no doubt Cooke is a good player, but Thomas seemed to turn a corner late in the year and he will benefit from TJ being back and not having the super short leash he had with Fred. That killed his confidence as if he missed 2 shots, he was out of the game. Nothing worse for a shooter....

Absolutely. I wasn't trying to say there wasn't a difference. Sorry if that came off as combative, just trying to contribute to the conversation. I agree it needed to be corrected.

I don't disagree, but when you're the 8th or 9th best player on a team with Final Four aspirations, there aren't enough possessions to let Matt Thomas get out of his funk. In this case, Fred played it correctly.

And to add, whether Monte is back or not is doubtfully the determinate if Cooke or Thomas starts. Assuming Burton and Malou do, Jackson would likely be the point and I don't see us going with only 1 starter over 6'4, not in the Big 12.

How did Thomas have a super short leash with Fred?

I can agree, but I remember similar conversations being had around this time last year. He just never managed to overcome that confidence issue. I hope Thomas is able to be the shooter we know he is capable of being. But I still think Cooke will be pushing him if he able to recover fully from surgery.

Considering what we saw when he got hot, I disagree.

There aren't enough minutes in the game to let Thomas throw the ball up until he gets hot, that's not how this works. He's started games and shot the ball plenty, and he did poorly. He's gonna have to learn how to score without being a volume 3 shooter.
