Starting guards, in bar far the best conference in America simply cannot play great for 6 games a year and be a complete liability for 2/3 of the season. That's the role of a backup/bench guard.

I think Gabe as the first or second player off the bench would elevate himself and Iowa State tremendously! I want that role for him. Especially playing that level of defense in practice every day
Good lord dude, there's more to basketball than making three point shots

If you think Gabe's only problem was 3 point shooting, you were not paying attention. He was abysmal on offense. He brings a lot as a perimeter defender and leader, and I expect him to play a lot next year. But he was not good in a lot of areas this past year and while I think he can definitely improve, I'm also not betting a lot on a 5th year guy to take massive strides. Ideally he can play a much lower volume and usage role on offense next season.

Gabe is not a good 3pt shooter. He was at one point in his career but he’s not anymore. Does that mean he won’t be next year? No. Even him improving to 30+% would be great for us. The only way that happens is to improve the overall offensive talent around him. Him and Brockington were “the guys” last year, mostly due to experience. Hunter was only a freshman. Shooting less threes playing less time without bearing all the “pressure” of being the guy should help that.

We’re a few pieces away from having a real nice team next year. Just need TJ and co. to fill it out. Williams was a great get for a big role position but now we’re waiting for the “big” hits.

What is it like recruiting and getting commitments from solid players in the transfer portal? My coach refuses to do this so I have to live vicariously through you guys.
For me, I love this time of year. Even just being tied to a bunch of guys is fun, you jump to every furthest conclusion possible and it's exciting. Hope Fran (or a different Iowa coach for your sake) eventually realizes how big of a part of modern college basketball this time of year is.

It’s actually quite fun. Like free agency

48.8% shooting from 2 point is abysmal?

He turned it over too much for a player at his position, but without a 2nd point guard on the roster a lot of players turned it over more than they should have. You mention "a lot of areas" where he was not good. Which areas?

Your 3rd highest usage player having 44%TS, 42% EFG, 20%FTR, (not offense but I'll include it anyway) 4.7% rebounding rate (only above Carter Boothe who had 0 rebounds on the season), nearly 20% turnover rate, and an 11% assist rate are all very bad. He was the only player on the roster with negative Offensive Win Shares. Easily the worst on the roster in Offensive Box Plus Minus.

Yes, Gabe's offensive numbers were abysmal.

I really do hope his Wisconsin game emphasized to himself when, where, and how he's at his best.

Playing WI helped.

Their ability to stop the ball was the worst ISU has seen in a really long time.

I hope he doesn't.

And Gabe will need to be more consistent in those too. Way too many turnovers given the lack of assists. The ball stopped quite a bit. Low FT rate. Rebounding. He made Hunter's job a lot harder. You'd like your 2 guard to be much better in helping the pg.

Hopefully a reduced role will allow for improvement in many areas.

This is kind of how it feels to be honest. It's like watching your sibling open a really cool present and then you open your present but it's underwear and socks.
Exactly, when I was around 10 we went to step mother's family for family Christmas dinner. My step brother and his cousins got fishing poles. My brother and I got old maid cards and one of those scratchy boards with the red plastic pen. Honestly, I would of understood if we got nothing. Not like they were my family.

So shooting and turnovers then. Not one mention of the dude's stellar defense on the perimeter against some of the best players in college basketball.

How does having bad offensive performances (especially when the entire team is having a poor offensive performance) make him a "complete liability" when he's not the one giving up an ungodly amount of points at the rim?

It makes things interesting, that's for sure.
Hopefully there's also general stability with returning players too.

Look, my entire point is that he was really bad on offense this year, even compared to the rest of the team. I think he absolutely will and should have a role on next years team. Probably as a starter. I just think that role is ideally like Tony Allen's on the Marc Gasol/Mike Conley Grizzlies teams. Low volume on offense, minimal three point attempts, minimize turnovers, and defend as hard as possible.
