Super downer but I don't think winning the B12 North either of those years we were one missed play away changes anything with the program. The division was really down and we likely just get annihilated in the title game.

Now the blarge...yeah that changes a lot. Niang breaking his foot is a little less clear cut than the blarge but also on that one who knows. With blarge we'd have had two games left where we were clearly the better team going in, at the very least you'd say we had a 50% chance to win both of the next two games...and unlike MSU they wouldn't have been full on deck stacked road games.

The question with blarge is more if we'd actually win the game changing that one play, I rewatched it not that long ago and it really was a big momentum swing and really was a horrendous officiating job.

If they called the block, as originally called, Shirley would have had an and-one and we go up 8-9 points with 4 min. to go. No telling how the game ends, but I would have liked our chances a little better.

Indeed. You either get the #2 Orange Bowl Oklahoma team (2004) or the #2 Vince Young Texas team (2005). Colorado lost those two games by a combined 112-6.

ISU may have moved up a spot in the league's bowl selection, but that's about it. Possibly an Alamo Bowl bid against either Ohio State (2004) or Michigan (2005).

Look at this whippersnapper here. You should know what's coming next ...

The year, 1923.

The location, Northrop Field.

The time, third quarter.

The player, Jack Trice.

The play, he falls.

After Jack Trice's death, Coach Sam Willaman said he would've been the greatest football player in America the following year. Teammates said he would've been an All-American. Football experts placed him on the same level as other black pioneers that reside in the NFL and College Hall of Fame. He starred in the mythical high school national championship game.

He played one full game for Iowa State. One.

Beyond meaningless sport, the loss of Jack still burns brightly. There have been so many like him, cut down before their time.

There's a good chance my parents were at the services on Central Campus as it drew about 4,000. They were both Freshmen at ISU in 1923. He was a Delt and she was a Tri-Delt.

Proving that women have always been three times better than men!

It's the Blarge by a mile and the only thing close is Georges breaking his foot.

The Blarge cost them probably a 70% chance at a NATIONAL TITLE. The Georges foot injury probably cost them a 30% chance. Those are HUGE, history changing deals.

I would love to say win the Big12 north, or beat Knobby on the 2pt conversion pass (both of which I was present for, ugh) to have the "last word" on those miserable ****ers. But those would be much less important in the overall scheme.

Wasn't one of those a 66-yard-ish desperation kick on the final play?

I don't recall length of the other two, but the chip-shot was something like 23 yards, basically PAT distance. How often did Giffords miss an extra-point at ISU? I know he missed vs. OU as a freshman, maybe there were others .. I think it was rare.
If memory serves -- and it seems to be doing so less and less these days -- he damn near nailed a 62-yarder as time expired.

I'm going to say Woody F'n Hayes punching that player.... Perhaps ISU has it's own Bill Snyder with Bruce. At worst, it lessens the likelihood of the 80's/90's football Chernobyl ISU experienced.

I've always heard Cooper begged for the job and the admins just passed.

1985 Big 8 Tournament Championship game
Oklahoma 73–71 Iowa State. Wayman Tisdale assaults Sam Hill within the last seconds of the game and the ref's of course call Hill for the foul. I think the game was tied and the freethrows were the difference. Tisdale got away with more fouls than any player in Big 8 history, he pushed off every time he got the ball down low and would get away with pushing on defense too. The benefits of being a known All-American for 3 years.

Sorry to be technical but actually it was not a blocking call. The Kansas player charged right over Georges and fell on top of Georges. No call! Then Georges, sitting on the floor, reaches to try to get the ball and THAT is when they blow the whistle finally. I can't recall if the KU guy ever let loose of the ball. If not, after he charged over Georges and no call, then he also traveled when he fell on top of Georges. Just one of the worst ref jobs of all time.

I bring this up every time this topic/situation comes up: Prior to that, Jeff ****ing Withey fouled an ISU player out at mid-court, and he himself started walking off the floor because he was fouled out. Instead they call it on someone who was about 3 feet away from the ball when Withey hacked him, and Withey stays in as probably the most important player on the court to help KU.

Also the banked shot that maybe should have been defended different at FH that same season, but that's always a philosophical debate. .

I wasn't able to watch ISU much that season due to not having ESPNU but that's one I saw unfortunately.
