Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

So my take:

1) The hotel thing is reasonable and a non issue

2) The assistant ticket thing is easily verified by the ticket office and both JP and FH said assistants are not being charged for tickets and never had.

3) The coaches families paying for the NCAA tournament travel made sense when it was explained that FH and JP agreed to have the AD pay for the families to travel to Hawaii rather than the NCAA tournament.

So imo all these items are easily to verify and have been verified to refute what Hines wrote.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I think Hines stands by "fred didn't respond on the record".. I'd bet money Hoiberg told him, off the record, don't run the story, it is false.

I'd bet money Holberg and Hines spoke but I'd also bet money he didn't say what you think. Hines would be a total hack if he ran with the story after that.

After listening to JP, Holberg, and Hines today on this... I find Holberg to be the least believable. I think he may have had some issues with JP but still a solid working relationship, Hines took the story further than Fred was comfortable with, and now Fred's trying to soften the blow.

Sounds to me like Scott and CW told us what happened with Hines and Fred with the questions they asked Hines.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

1- Bad timing for an article and clearly there were agendas by the sources (there always are).

2- Examples in story probably weren't the best or most convincing that could have been used, but clearly the situations irked some involved.

3- Its no secret that JP is overly frugal and has rubbed many donors, reporters, employees, etc the wrong way. Up to and including with how he handled Fred's departure and subsequent coaching search.

4- It is very well known that JP has an ego bigger than most, though a little smaller than Trump's, and it would not surprise any donor or reporter that he could be considered jealous to play second fiddle.

5- Nobody should ever suggest that Fred would push or endorse things like this, his desire is always to help ISU and take the high road.

6- Much of the backstory of what Hines said is very much factual, but the exact circumstances of what was portrayed should have been researched further. I don't buy that this was a months long story, there just isn't enough meat to it or actual research.

7- My guess as stated earlier is that this was pushed both by a prior assistant and several donors that want to make sure JP isn't given total control of the FB coaching search as they are worried of him going far too cheap.

8- Hines is a good reporter, but didn't do his homework on this and it's showing.

9- JP is cheap and does nickel and dime, but everything should be put into context when reported in a publication.

Funny, Hines had no problem quoting other unnamed sources. Pollard rubs some people the wrong way, but Hines reported it in a less than honorable way. He basically posted gossip masked as real news. The problem is it really can damage the team we love, and that sucks.

So what in your interpretation are Scott and CW saying happened? Sorry, I don't have access to KXNO (not online either)

In journalism there is a difference between unnamed sources and off the record.

I believe Hines and have heard rumblings about pollard and Hoiberg having issues, but was like yah right. If most of this **** is true then Jamie and Paul can get the **** out of town.

Unnamed sources aren't the problem people. You look stupid when you complain about that or say they should be named. They are essential for all news and lots of other things. Hines never will nor should he name them. His mistake was not vetting what they claimed. Not his use of them.

What about the admin discouraging the transfer route? Did Fred/JP get asked about that?

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Someone is lying. Either Fred told him not to run the story. Or Fred didn't get back to Hines as Hines states.

I would have to side with Fred on this one. Hines nervously answered the question from Chris Williams.

Not necessarily. Fred could have told Hines to not run the story off the record.

It was pretty clear from Hines' recent interview that he talked to Fred...just not on the record for the story.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

If Pollard truly was jealous of Hoiberg's popularity, that's extremely petty and disappointing. Adoring Fred and still giving Pollard credit for what he's done aren't mutually exclusive to our fans

While I believe Fred would have left either way, I wouldn't doubt for one minute that Pollard is that petty. He has embarrassed himself in the media before. This isn't new.

So you read the article, then clicked reply without reading any other part of this 45 page thread?

You're right. CW and Siepker were using them incorrectly, which led to my confusion. Don't remember if Hines used the same terms.

I believe the story. The only think that is strange is this. Hoiberg makes 2.2 million dollars a year. The conditions were so bad that he could not pony up 5k to get his guys hotel rooms on his own dime and then take it up with the administration when he got home? I dont get that. The story sucks on all parts and is bad for pollard and ISU. Hate hearing this stuff.

No. Of course I no longer believe the article now that Fred has come out and refuted it. I was just saying that one didn't have to be present in the room to know how JP initially reacted to the story (that is - he declined to comment when asked to do so).

Yeah me either, because Fred has always been so forthright and honest (I want to end my career at ISU, I love Ames and ISU, and I have the perfect situation here in Ames). Did I remember them all correctly?

JP brought it up himself in a sarcastic way like "Apparently we don't take transfers anymore." So JP did refute it.

Perhaps this would be a violation.
