Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I wasn't able to catch all the radio interviews.
Did JP address the family travel charges? Why would AD family members get their fare paid and not the staff families?

Twelve family members of the men’s basketball staff were to be charged for traveling to San Antonio with the team while 12 members of multiple athletic administrators’ families were to be paid for by ISU, according to a document obtained through an open records requests. -

Which is what pisses me off about the hotel thing and whatever else we were "nickeling and diming" on. I don't disagree the hotel thing wasn't a big deal but you know what else isn't a big deal? A couple grand for the ISU AD. That's not worth it. That's what I hate about accountants, they only see the numbers that are in front of them.

I doubt it was a only a couple of grand. 13 traveling players means 7 rooms. Maybe 2 traveling managers means 1 room. A director of basketball and assistant director of basketball means 2 more rooms. 4 coaches, 4 more rooms. So 14 rooms---one of which was a suite. I'm guessing they aren't staying at the Best Western Honalulu. So 14 rooms times an average of $500 per room means $7000. For THREE HOURS. We aren't talking overnight. We are talking 3 hours.

Given the option of Hawaii (which normally would not be paid for) or NCAA game, which is obviously less expensive to foot on your own.

Yes he did. Since ISU was playing in Hawaii, Fred asked JP if the assistants's families could travel to Hawaii with. JP said that what can be done is to give the assistants the decision to pick whether they wanted their families to travel free to Hawaii or to the NCAA tournament site (which was later determined San Antonio). Fred said that was fair. That is why the open records request showed that not all of the families got to go to San Antonio, they had previously decided they would rather go to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic.

I like Travis a lot as a journalist, and have had plenty of issues with JP, but this was not a good day for Hines unless he is looking to build his resume for a future in tabloid journalism.

I guess the one question that remains did the AD families go to the tourney in Hawaii, if yes who paid for it?

Hopefully more of these guys come out with these kinds of comments after they spread this trash all day long. You can always count on Fran to have our back.
This. A-holes like Gottlieb and Katz tweet Hines' story in a heartbeat but say nothing when both Pollard and Hoiberg go on the air minutes after the story broke.

I like Fred, but this article makes me like Pollard. None of the complaints in the article seem all that troubling, especially the hotel rooms in Hawaii story. Even the "public shaming" of Holberg's contract might have been nothing more than Pollard saying that escalating coaching salaries are a concern. They are. If he would have said, "therefore we're freezing coaching salaries," then there would be a problem. My sense is that the AD at a school like ISU has to tightrope the dueling philosophies of penny pinching and spend big to go big.

I like how they found the only picture ever of Fred where he looks depressed

That we may not find out. If the AD families went, I think that would have surfaced by now. Who knows. It's just asinine that crap like this always hits the fan when ISU athletics takes any bit of momentum in the right direction.

And what is with this "almost double-digit" sources crap they keep saying. Just say how many sources you have, and quite making it seem like its more than it is. If it's 8 or 9 just say that. That phrase reeks of bush league spin in an effort to add additional legitimacy.

True or not, how does Hines expect to continue to work in Ames? He would have to have an exit strategy right? Nobody in the AD is going to willfully give him info anymore.

So that I do not have to read this entire thread, is there many people outraged that our favorite non-profit had to sometimes monitor its spending?

Of course he will stay in Ames, even if he got burned on this story he didn't out his sources so they will continue to give him info.

His problem is that his sources aren't in Ames anymore. They are two former assistant coaches. Ever notice how he doesn't get inside recruiting scoops with our new coaching staff? Ya, those connections dried up once Cornell Mann and Matt A left town.
