The way he said it makes me think he uses that word all the time. It wasn’t an accident or slip of the tongue. He’s just sorry he got caught. He should be fired and it was a mistake that just slipped out.

If he gets fired he could always be a life skills coach for the Iowa football program.
Teach them to be equal opportunity offenders. Don't just hate AAs, you gotta discriminate against gays, different religions, and other things right?
It is amazing!
Thom taken off the air. Says he's"deeply ashamed," as though someone who was deeply ashamed would have fired that off in the first place.
Dude's lucky he had a famous broadcasting dad.
He should have just lied and said he was talking about a hard working city or a hard place to work. Wonder what was said before they went back on the air and who was he talking to.
What do you think should happen here? I don't think using language like that is a mistake that just slips out.
The part I love with situations like these is when, after being caught, they say "...that isn't me... that isn't who I am..."
Dude, you thought the mic was off, that's exactly who you are.
Eh I’m fine living in a world where using a slur that is incredibly well known as being incredibly offensive will get you fired.
plus, his apology didn’t do him any favors. “I’m sorry to the people that sign my paychecks. Oh, and if other people were offended I’m sorry to them too”
He can do those things without having his current job. I like how you put the responsibility to work with him on the community he debased.I'd like to see education occur. Get him involved in discussions with the LGBTQ community. Get him exposed to people of different orientations. Help him to understand the power of his words and how hurtful they can be. See if he is willing to change his ideas and beliefs.
My concerns are that when someone is simply fired, it really does nothing to change beliefs and opinions of the offender (in fact, it could possibly create resentment and strengthen those biased opinions). I think if we really want to rid this world of bigotry, we need to change hearts, not just silence the voices. I'd rather see mercy and conversion than condemnation and bitterness.
There's a difference between "inappropriate" and flat out bigoted. He said it at work and deservedly will be fired. But in all seriousness let's make a list of all the people ever that have at no point in their life made an inappropriate comment.
1.
I think that's why so many people backed up Mr. King when AB took a dump on him. (Which was a joke in itself as Old Auggie was about as racist as they came)
PC and real life never really match up well. Often the biggest accusers are the worst offenders.
Reds players said they wouldn't take the field if he was in the booth.I don't see how he doesn't get fired over this. Just too much negative backlash from it that it's not worth the bad PR and headaches that would come from retaining him. Kind of a real life Jim Brockmire moment. Thom has had a pretty storied career too so its a hard lesson learned how you have to be careful and always assume the mic is on because 1 slip up could be the end of your career in that business.
What does that have to do with a sportscaster who said a homophobic slur just a day or two ago in 2020 when he thought the mic was not one?? This isn't a mistake, it revealed the lack of character that he has. This is 2020. He should know better. He said it at work and deservedly will be fired. But in all seriousness let's make a list of all the people ever that have at no point in their life made an inappropriate comment.

I would say that the players' opinions and wishes should be recognized. Seems like THEY don't want him representing them, from what JP4Cy posted.Ok here's what needs to happen: He needs to apologize (he did). And life should go on.
End of story
