Is there some rule about how many non-conference home games a team can have? I just looked out at the football schedules on Cyclones.com and every year they are hosting the Iowa game, they are playing a lower level team on the road. This has actually been a trend since the 9 game conference schedule started (2011 we played @ UCONN, 2013 @ Tulsa, 2015 @ Toledo) and we are scheduled to play @ Akron in 2017. Just seems kind of odd it would be that way unless there is some sort of limit.

No, but you already have one FCS team whether that be UNI or another one. You have one game left to schedule and we have elected to give 1 and 1s which has somewhat grown on me because you get the team on the road but not at a real tough venue plus you save a little money.

Jamby knows nothing about what he's talking about but just keeps typing. Really, it's just another effort to display his little brother syndrome and talk about Iowa because he really just wants to be an Iowa fan.

No rule on number of home non-conference games that could be played. The landscape of scheduling non-conference games has turned to playing 2 for 1 with lesser opponents. When we host Iowa is a good time to play that 1 away game with a lesser opponent so that we can maintain at least 2 non conference home games a year.

It looks like in 2019 we have UNI, Iowa and Louisiana-Monroe all scheduled at home. Otherwise, it looks like through 2023 we will have 7 home games except for the years we have UNI and Iowa at home (2017,2021 and likely 2023.)

Where did you see ULM scheduled? It lists the 3rd non-con game as "TBA" on the Cyclones.com football schedule. Plus it only list schedules out to 2020 from what I see.

If teams more high profile than Iowa travel to the likes of Toledo, no reason for us to complain about the 2 for 1 games.

ISU doesn't do much if any 2 for 1 scheduling in the last 15 years. Been exclusively 1 home for 1 road for many OOC opponents (Tulsa/Toledo(twice)/UNLV/Army). UNLV and Army were not done in B2B seasons though, like Tulsa/Toledo recently. I did see 3 straight years of Kent St though in 07/08/ @ KSU in 09

Upcoming schedules have more 1 home & 1 road vs UNLV, Akron, and Arky St, with solo home games vs Fresno St, and ULM. Over the long haul, 2 for 1 would seem to make more financial sense, but it doesn't appear to be happening other than the Kent St instance...and hard to say if that was planned or it just came about as a solo game which then turned into a H & R.

lots of teams go to these types of locales. Okie St opened up at Central Michigan. Michigan St played @ Western Mich? this year. I don't mind it. Good way to test your team in a hostile environment IMO. I understand the 'need' fore home games. With TV money the way it is, the need for those home games is not as big. I am not a big fan of neutral site games though.

hostile environment? Really?

This is why the internet is awesome. People just look for things to throw at someone to make themselves feel better. Yes, I said hostile environment as in you are not at home when you have the backing of 95% of the people in the stands. When you are on the road you are much less likely to receive home cooking type calls from refs. This is a good way to break in young guys to get them ready for road games in conference.

I am a horrible person because I said that, thanks.

You having a bad day? A bit of an overreaction. Toledo wasn't a hostile environment, if anything it looked and sounded like playing at a neutral site game given how many fans came dressed as empty seats. And interestingly enough, ISU did indeed get the "home-cooking" calls.

If we stay bad, Akron may cancel out.

Open Dates?
* I loathe September open dates on the football schedule. Should NEVER happen in Iowa.
We had two last year which is insane....

ISU travels to Toledo and another open date yesterday----- two perfect weekends BURNED.
What a waste!

what was wasted?
~ Host prospects/recruits on beautiful Sept. Saturdays in Ames
~ A chance to tailgate and enjoy a game in gorgeous weather
~ Introduce new and prospective fans to ISU tailgating in gorgeous weather
~ An opportunity to sell out Trice 1-2 times in gorgeous weather

~ Good luck getting new fans to come to a game in November

Scheduling?
Why are we traveling to Toledo? Iowa in their arrogance would never do that. Iowa went on the road twice in recent years vs MAC teams (NIU) and it was @ Soldiers Field

FYI.

I love football-type weather however, but many people do not.

I was at the KU game in 2013 with a 7-degree kickoff temp. It was actually a great time

I was also at a far worse weather-related game--that gusty November 2012 game vs West Virginia. Simply AWFUL

Expand your horizons and try to find something else to do other than live and die with football.

I do wish that we could start trying to play H/H in areas that we recruit or should recruit, like UCF, UTSA, and North Texas. Ohio doesn't seem like too much of a hotbed. Seems to me, if you're going to play those games on the road, play them in front of the players that you're trying to bring in. Both Kansas State and Oklahoma State played UTSA this year.

Maybe we've tried and MAC schools are the only ones that return our calls.
