I don't know. I like Scheelhase on paper but I have too many questions right now... primarily, it strikes me as odd to fire Manning only to promote from within. I mean, I think there were a number of flaws with the offense and I would have liked to have seen some outside people come in and perhaps look more critically. I don't doubt CMC but at the end of the day, sometimes that "fresh" set of eyes and a fresh perspective really can see things that we ourselves are blind to, both in life and in sports. Also while Scheelhase is a very highly thought of young promising coach - this is a lot to thrust on him and think he's going to fix or help fix one of statistically the worst offenses in the nation without ever having done this before. Those are my concerns.

Does it make me right? Heck no. This could be a 15/10 hire and I hope that it is. Because that is what would be best for Iowa State and that's what we all want.

But I don't know if I'm popping champagne bottles. Had we raided a top non-power 5 school I'd grade it higher but if I were handed out letter grades I'd call it a solid B? Maybe B-? IDK. Its hard to grade and judge when there isn't much or any real evidence of what he's like as a play caller.

I hope he has some new ideas because while execution certainly has to improve along with play calling, I also think that this season showed we needed new ideas on offense and I just don't know how this stacks up but I will certainly be hoping for much success

Morever... why did we stick with Gordon as quarterbacks coach?
Prepare to get dumb and disagree responses. You will like the new coach regardless. Step in line or be criticized.

Alot of Gordon hate on here, which I guess I can understand. But I'm not sure that the actual QB play has been the issue so much as the O-Line consistently being an issue. Purdy spent the better part of 3 years running for his life and he's passed that torch on to Hunter. Obviously Purdy improved greatly in his skill set because Kyle Shannahan saw enough to continue elevating him up the depth chart, and Kyle Shannahan knows a thing or two about quality QB play.

It's just so hard to assess anything offensively when you have a line that can't block.

I’ll share some more thoughts from current players (not naming them of course) when I get a chance. But, there are mixed emotions though. All happy for him as a person and someone they respect, but a lot of concerns and reservations about how many changes will be seen day to day based on what they’ve seen and experienced.

I remember when he played at Illinois.

I googled it and he's only 32. That's not old enough to do much of anything, let alone try to turn around a terrible offense. He should apply again in 5 or 6 years.

Not impressed at all by this hire.

How old was Campbell when he was hired as HC at Toledo?
How old was McVey when he was hired as HC for the LA Rams?

Do you seriously think being a 32 year old OC is an issue? There are many examples of successful young coaches in the OC or HC positions. Hell, look at the Big12 championship game- Colin Klein and Garrett Riley are both 33

This feels alot like Notre Dame giving Marcus Freeman their HC job. Young, talented and a solid recruiter, but definitely inexperienced when compared to other options. But I think you see these schools concerned about letting someone young and full of potential decide to cut their teeth elsewhere and leave. Heck, happened to us with Golesh.

So in many ways I get it. I imagine there will be a learning curve but identifying and retaining young talent is important.

Indiana hired one guy who should have been at the top of the list. Bob Bostad was not retained by Fickell in Madison. If he can bolt from being tied to Tom Allen's hot seat that would be the smart move. I don't think it's that uncommon for an assistant coach hire to bolt for another job within a month of accepting a position.

It's pretty incredible to me how many doubters and negative Nancy's are on this thread. We all wanted change right? Someone a bit more creative than Manning? Can we all agree that staff retention is also important?

We get someone who is new at calling plays, but who is also familiar with the program. Someone who won't break the bank, but also is seen as an up-and-comer that other places would have opened their wallets. From what I've heard, he's well liked by pretty much everyone and is a natural leader.

To me this is the by far the best option available.

This is not making me feel any less underwhelmed. If the guys in the program aren't feeling it thats concerning.

How many who are critical of this hire have also voiced complaints that we ever let Golesh get away? This is the same situation. Do you want to let the young stud get away and possibly lose out on the benefit of him maximizing his potential elsewhere, then be left wondering what could have been?

What players aren't feeling "it." Were there 3 players, 30 players, were they starters, were they subs, freshman, seniors, etc.?

Very weak post by whomever said this.
