Schlabach: ISU heading in wrong direction

I think people are focusing (thanks in part to the OP's thread title) waaaay too much on the "heading in the wrong direction" piece. I'm going off the top of my head here from when I read the article a week ago, but weren't there numerous criteria for what makes each team a certain number? So, the heading in the wrong direction would only be one criterion for a 2, but being a 2 doesn't necessarily mean a team is moving in the wrong direction. Or am I not remembering correctly?

With that said I think the people taking offense to being a 2 are similar to the Hawk fans on HN taking offense to being a 3. I don't think either ISU or Iowa can complain about where they are ranked. Do ISU fans honestly think they should be a 3? ISU hasn't consisently made bowl games or been relevant enough in their conference to warrant higher than a 2, IMO. Same goes for Iowa being a 3. They haven't been consistently successful enough to be a 4, and they haven't won/shared a Big 10 title for several years. A team that is consistently successful at a top 25 level and competes for conference championships annually would be a 4 to me. A 5 would be the very few elite teams. I told Hawk fans on HN the same thing when some were complaining about being a 3.

And at the end of the day this is just Schlabach's opinion. There are several teams whose rankings don't seem to make any sense. (Mizzu a 4, really? Baylor a 3?) People shouldn't get too worked up over this.

IMO, this is WAY over the top. We MUST hold on to CPR for as long as we possibly can IMO... hopefully forever. He is the right man for this job... period. He's only had two years. It will take longer than that to turn this thing around.

With that being said, I do think Tom Herman will be on the hot seat the next two seasons. He should be given two more years IMO to prove himself though. But IMO, he's done next to nothing so far. And no, I didn't expect miracles from him, but I thought we'd be a little better than around the 100th ranked offense in the country out of 119 teams. I could probably get us ranked that high.

CPR has never claimed to be an offensive genius, he's a defensive guy, that's why the offense is basically 100% on Herman's shoulders. And in your second year, there's no excuse for basically not even being able to get a single first down in the entire first half against Iowa. That's a disgrace.

I think us ISU fans realize we "might" be in the process of turning the corner, but I surely don't expect the rest of the country to know this. What do we have to show the rest of the country to prove we're headed in the right direction? Not much. Recruiting cannot be analyzed until the guys hit the field.

I'm cautiously optimistic that we're headed in the right direction, but still think we have a lot to prove.

I can't disagree with this any more than I do. If he goes 3-9 or 4-8 the next 5 years, he should be shown the door just like any other head coach would be. Job retention should come back to results. If the results suck, the boss gets rid of the employee. No different here. Having a ton of passion for what you do doesn't make you good at what you do. Fennelly has a lifetime contract because he's built Iowa State's program into a top 25 program with top 5 attendance. His results speak for themselves.

If a football program isn't turned around in years 4 and 5 (when the coach has his first recruiting classes as upperclassmen) I have a hard time seeing it get turned around period. Obviously there are exceptions, but for the most part, no results in years 4-5 should get you shown the door.

Short of a few stints in the 1970s and the 2000s, ISU has no relevant football history outside of consistently being one of the worst programs in DI/I-A/FBS. ISU needs to build a PROGRAM and a TRADITION, something that has been sorely lacking, and that is something that cannot be accomplished in 2-3 year stints. While I agree we shouldn't be guaranteeing CPR 10 years to get the job here, not giving him at least 4-5 years (as in, another 2-3 years) to get the ball rolling in the right direction is extremely shortsighted.

I agree with this. Sorry if my previous post sounded like he deserved to be fired after two or three years from now. I'm willing to be patient cause it will be a difficult task, I was just merely pointing out that he doesn't deserve a huge extension/tenured job. That is a special thing, and he will need to prove he can get the results constantly equivalent to the success Bill Fennelly has gotten out of the womens bball team.

Article from ESPN.com rates teams on 5 point scale. Has ISU heading in wrong direction as 2/5 on same level as KU and KSU in Big 12.

If I were to rate us, I think I would've gone with 3/5, but I'm an optimist.

As a hawk fan, I would pick #3. I am a big believer in your coach.

Whoa on that bolded part....I agree he will get plenty of time to build this program, at least another three years before any pressure is on.

But the idea of going back to the "he wants to be here, so it doesn't matter if he is successful" ******** is not anywhere near Jamie Pollard's job description. If it is apparent after five years that the program is not going anywhere, I would expect JP to insist upon changes, or pull the trigger.

I don't think that will be the case. I think Rhoads will get the job done, and win as much as you can at Iowa State before he moves on. Then it will be up to whoever the AD is to hire the next guy to keep the program going.

But these types of statements have always baffled me about Iowa State fans. They are completely wrong at their premise, and have gone a long ways toward holding the athletic department back. Well, that and contracts that lock in ****** coaches.
