Relatedly, I was recently thinking just how much of this roster could be back next year. I think the only ones we lose for sure are Gilbert and Chatfield. Jones too is most likely out of eligibility but small possibility for another year with the JUCO/COVID thing.

Someone can correct me, but I think Curtis is using his covid year right now. Heise could still use one next year technically since he also has a medical RS. But no clue on the juco thing

There was a ruling earlier this year that JUCO years don't count against your eligibility, or something similar. Curtis is in a bit of a grey area there because he'll have played the full four years of NCAA ball, but also played a year of JUCO during a year that would have made him eligible for a COVID year if he'd been on an NCAA team.

I doubt he gets another year, but it could possibly happen.

Excellent synopsis of a situation many are struggling to understand. Well done.

Probably depends on whether Heise is back or not. But even if he is, there should be more minutes for Nojus with Gilbert and Jones departing. That almost 70 minutes a game opening up.
I would put a significant amount of money on TJ getting 2 transfers to fill the majority of those minutes.

It will be an interesting offseason no doubt. We've also got 2 young guards coming in as freshmen in Batemon and Macari Moore. I think Moore is the eventual Tamin replacement, but Batemon should compete for those vacated minutes as early as next year IMO.

He had 19 points and 9 rebounds against Kansas. His game reminds me of his dad and Momcilovic.
And his team still lost by 12. He was coming off the bench earlier this year, wonder of CU has some injury issues as he was only getting about 15 mpg until he's been playing 25+ the last 15. This game was also the best of his career, he has only touched double digits 1 other Big 12 game prior to it.

Wish the kid well but probably some reason we did not recruit him. Guys gotta play both ends of the floor for us so maybe his defense was an issue? Not sure who he would be playing over on our current roster right now when he was coming off the bench for a bad CU team to start the season.

pearly, CU was trying to see how much they could get from a few transfers (non panned out). Sebastian did get injured and took a while to come back and adjusting to D1 hoops.

I saw that NAIA transfer's minutes are way down, which I imagine opened up time for Rancik. Your program may be in trouble when you're dipping into the NAIA transfer pool.

I think I'm most excited about Batemon in the short term. That dude is on fire right now, and his size/game could translate really well to high major college.

CU is objectively "bad" from top to bottom.

We went to the game in Boulder since we happened to be visiting family near there already.

Obviously I can't testify to the players' mindset, but my sense of the game was that within the first 5 minutes of playing CU, our team knew CU didn't have what it takes to threaten them. It was a kind of "playing with our food" game. Then naturally we gave up some open 3's and CU got a little warm in the first half. The crowd actually got into it a little. Iowa State had to get serious in the 2nd half to gut that game out.

CU is a scrappy team but easily bottom-third in talent in this conference.

Oh and I had to take this picture. Maybe there is a deeper story behind it (I didn't ask) but as it stands, it's ridiculously funny for a fan of a visiting team.

I could see TJ leaning on bringing in 1 tfr guard to fill Gilbert/CuJo minutes. But with Tamin back at PG (but being a senior), would think the coaching staff is going to create a path for a young guard like Indrusaitis, Toure, Batemon or Moore to start. Similar to the approach with Momcilovic as a frosh.

A lot depends on defections (and Rock's development), but the other big need I foresee on next years roster is an above-the-rim post. Against some quicker teams would be nice to have a Ward or Osunniyi type player.

Surprised they don't have anything honoring Chauncey Billups, perhaps they do and it's just not on the Wall of Honor you have captured. IIRC, he was an All-American and Colorado

From what I understand, Jones was a juco player during the time frame outlined by the judge in his decision. In addition, he is in his last season of eligibility. Therefore, if he desires to return he can. If I am wrong please correct my errors, thanks.

He’ll have more career impact than a few on our roster, but the real question is whether we could have landed him

In the portal era, you have to be old. Not all freshman want to compete for minutes behind transfers.

It’s a gray area at the moment. I think according to what was laid out he technically could, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was decided he can’t. Most all other people in similar situations don’t have 4 full years at the NCAA D1 level, which I believe is the intention. Obviously Covid years really made things go crazy.

They have 2 such players from NAIA or D2. I thought that was a very bold strategy for year 1 in the Big 12.

I don't see how he could possibly get an extra year (barring the NCAA going to five years for everyone). He can't get an extra year of eligibility from the 2020-21 season by "not-counting" it twice (as a covid year and as a juco year). He played four seasons of NCAA ball, and none were the covid year.

Tough to see him getting included in the blanket waiver in a different era, but there doesn’t need to be much grey area for the NCAA to capitulate right now

Given the argument is centered on the 4 in 5 year clock, there is a significant leap in logic between a ruling that forces the NCAA to not count time at a juco towards that 4 in 5 clock, and granting a 5 in 6 clock because of an assumption that had a player not enrolled at a juco he would have matriculated at an NCAA school and had 5 in 6 to play

Put another way, post-grad players at prep schools playing a 5th year of prep ball aren’t likely to get a 5 in 6 because of this ruling/memo….although it’s something they should try to get in today’s weakened ncaa era
