The floor feels similar with both, and that's having to rely on the defense to overperform with a struggling offense that turns it over too much. But the ceiling is just different. Dekkars has a ton more arm strength and seems to fit the scheme a bit better which appears to be designed for a pocket passer.

That was the Briles method at Baylor and look how well that worked. What sticks in my head about those Briles teams is when they hit the slant with those speed demons, the chance of the opposing team catching those receivers was slim.

Manning is garbage, I've been saying it for a while before today. I should have said it was the only good play call he had. Do I think Dekkars is 100% better? Hell no. Do I think he might have a higher ceiling? Yes, he has much better arm strength. Two of Brock's picks today were not his fault, but the one that was is really concerning to me. For this offense to have any breathing room, they need to be able to connect on a deep shot every now and again.

I don't just jump to the backup because the starter is struggling, but Purdy was a stud when he was free-balling his first 2 years. Manning has turned him into a weak overly scripted player. The best thing he could do is sit a game or two and get back to having fun. You can tell he's struggling to make the reads, he's not seeing the linemen right in front of him, and he has lost touch with his receivers.

Dekkers will develop into a good player IF Manning leaves. He has a nice touch and doesn't tend to overthrow his receivers, which are the passes that get Purdy into trouble as they are much more likely to be tipped or intercepted.

Yeah calling for Dekkers is more about calling for a QB unconstrained by Manning’s tutoring. Give me freshman playmaking Brock. Turnovers are bad, but at least the upside is there in that version

That would have been a great call with a QB that can thrown it more than 35 yards. Like DEKKERS. Brock has no range outside of 15 yards.

He’s the winningest QB for sure. But a lot of his success is the system. Sage, Seneca, Steele, hell even Jacob Park probably could do the same or more with the help Purdy has had.

Manning has turned Purdy way too much into Kempt.
Look at the 2017 season- basically the same as 2020 but close losses.

That's a good point, and again why I think Dekkars is a better fit with Manning calling plays. Purdy is at his best when he's on the move and the offense is going up tempo. But if Manning is gonna want to use play action shots to create space underneath, Dekkars and his stronger arm seem to be the move.

In Purdy’s defense, we wasted the uni game prep. Maybe get the timing and nuances practiced instead of running sweeps to the short side?

Manning is at best an average playcaller in the style of game CMC apparently wants. Very little setup and feel. He does better with more pass oriented games, but even then our offense is deficient in the nuances that are needed to play above our talent

We need a playmaker at qb to overcome this

This. Brock cannot complete a pass of more that 20 yards, and defenses know it.

I think you're right that Dekkars shouldn't be handed the job based on scoring after Iowa went into prevent D. Purdy has earned a longer leash. I would love to see them give him more freedom and play with his natural instincts we saw as a freshman. Also 1000000000% agree that Manning should be much more aggressive.

My only thing is that I think Dekkars stylistically fits the scheme Manning is calling right now, appearing to be more of a pocket passer and having a bigger arm.

Brock Purdy is the best quarterback ever at ISU but when he is throwing the ball it’s going Kolar or Hutchinson. He doesn’t even have a third or fourth read anymore. It’s those guys from the snap and it’s freak out mode if either throw isn’t there, then either run or force it in there.

It is not just the bar is low, the comparison rigged.
Purdy has far better teams around him for 3+ years. The game has changed. Looking at completion percentage in the historical sense is silly. A lot of fluff games like last week in which it would have been better had his percentage gone down because we were actually utilizing the whole field instead of checking down

Purdy is the most successful QB we've had, but not the most talented. Not more talented than Sage or Seneca. Steele and Park may have had more talent. Richardson with a better supporting team and coached to checkdown

And given what Manning and CMC want to do, a QB like Lanning may help us win more. We want to win the margins and be a physical running team. We desperately need the QB to be able to take off and scramble.

Dekkers can do everything Purdy does. Its not like Dekkers can't throw little swing passes and other short passes. There's nothing Purdy can do that Dekkers can't. Hell Alabama and those teams are always benching guys that have been starters.

Frankly, it's because Purdy's mistakes are still that of what you would expect someone without a ton of experience to make. Today, not all of the turnovers were his fault, but Brock gets stuck on his first read often, and makes questionable decisions at times. I think the thought is that if Dekkars were to make "freshman mistakes" they would look a lot like that.

Most Cyclone fans have such a low opinion of the program these guys on winning teams are miracles to them. People had convinced themselves Kempt was a good Big 12 QB.

The same is kind of true of CMC, if we're being honest. Having jokers like Rhoads and Chizik, and being late to the commitment to college athletics, makes a competent coach seem like a savant. CMC is still a young coach. Fixing the offense is part of his growth imo
