Should ISU establish the passing game first.

No, but when the defense has 8 in the box and you run the same zone read with a quarterback who won't actually keep it because he's incapable of doing so that's a coaching problem.
That's what the occasional bubble screen is for. :jimlad:

But, how would we know this? Should our OC be a mind-reader? If only there was some way to tell based on the positioning of the defenders prior to the snap . . .
Eight defenders in the box is a pretty solid indication that the defense is expecting run.

Are you trying to imply that calling bubble screens every other play won't work? :jimlad:
Bubble Screens are like attacking the Maginot Line. The French had too much line to defend. When we go bubble, we stretch the defense across the field just like the Maginot Line and hopefully move the ball downfield. We just need a crack Panzer Unit.:swoon:

I think we come out throwing the ball. A couple of screens and slant routes. Test the waters early on. If that goes well, open up the running game and maybe toss a deep pass. I never understood why we run up the gut the first 2 plays of every single game. IIRC, didn't Tulsa blitz a ton in the bowl game? I would imagine they would stick with that game plan. We have to make that backfire on them!

I would be happy to just see a plan. To my uneducated eye it looks like the plays are called randomly with no plan of attack to exploit the defense. It seems plays are picked based on throwing darts against the wall seeing what will work.

So far... ISU hasn't shown the ability to run the ball against any defensive alignment they have gone up against. The line has been dominated, the backs can't get any rhythm going because they are playing musical chairs, and there has been zero creativity in the running game up to this point.

If this is how Mess is going to work the running game then it is going to be a futile effort. If Shontrelle is going to take the handoff and dance around in the backfield and get dropped for no gain or a minimal gain each carry maybe he shouldn't be getting any carries. If White and Wimberly are going to average over 5 yards per carry but the QB isn't going to give them the football... why even bother trying to run it?

I was up in Madison at the Wisconsin-Purdue game on Saturday afternoon and watched them gash Purdue all day long running the football. Their backs hit the hole hard, make 1 cut and go. ISU hasn't had a back hit the hole hard yet this season. ISU has rushed for 227 yards in 2 games on 68 carries and scored 0 td's. Wisconsin's 3rd string RB ( a true freshman) has 334 yards on 44 carries and 4 td's. ISU's leading ball carrier in the RB department is James White with 12 carries so far. I walked away from that game thinking about ISU's offense and just how damn depressing it is to watch.

While having some patience at the RB position can be good, I like watching this style. I like watching Amir Carlisle from Notre Dame. A good one-cut runner that hits the hole quickly can hide a lot of failed sustained blocks. Then again, it's a little tough to hit the hole hard when the play is so slow developing that it takes three seconds to get the handoff.

I don't know much about QB play, but I noticed a huge difference in ball handling between SR and Rudock. For example, when Iowa ran play action it was very crisp and Rudock really sold it. Our play action this year and last has always seemed slow and sloppy.

Yeah, let's call more bubble screens. That will work! I still can't believe I heard that comment from CPR. Let's see, everyone up close to the LOS, an OL that can't block, WRs that can't block, yet the solution is to throw the ball behind the LOS to a WR? I may not be a FB genius, but that seems like a pretty bad strategy. At this point, I don't know if CPR should be less hands-on with the offense or more.

I think we need to really think outside of the box this game. Establish the punt game first, punts on 1st down our first few series, get Kirby involved in the game, mess with Tulsa's head a bit.

I totally agree with this. Mess seems to be just running the ****** regardless of the defensive alignment or strengths. Then somewhere in the 3rd quarter or so, he COMPLETELY abandons the running game and become totally unbalanced.
And when we do audible or change the play, it is ALWAYS changed to a zone read option. Which fails.

I hate the zone read so much. So much.

The athletic dept. just announced a new contest, where a lucky winner will be drawn every Wednesday and the winner gets to call the offensive plays via telephone that Saturday!! Since I can guess the plays we run now 80% of the time, I think I could do a better job than Mess. I hope they draw my name!!

most football teams in todays game establish the pass first... the run game is a product of the pass... esp in the NFL.
We are seeing more run schemes stuffed in college as the years go by. College may gradually transition to more passing.

Rwemember it has been said that straight handoff runs will not work for our work in progress oline, the line that spent all year pumping iron to be lean and mean and not fat.
