This is not a typical season-opening opponent. These guys are good. History suggests it would be the most ISU thing ever to lose. My belief is the new culture will prevail but there will be some uncomfortable moments.

Our defense will have them stymied early on. Brock will come out and do whatever his heart desires between the 20s, but ISU will have a hard time in the RedZone and settle for FG tries. Assalley will miss at least one chip shot. Cyclones put up 6 in the first half, but hold Louisiana to 3, who only scored because of a botched snap fumble by ISU in their own territory.

Iowa State gives up a TD scoring drive to start the 2nd half, Louisiana scores the first TD of the season and goes up 10-6. Iowa State wakes up and scores quickly with some jet tempo, 2:30 scoring drive to go up 13-10. Louisiana then goes 3 and out, the pumped in crowd noise is getting loud. Next thing you know, Louisiana is punting and Iowa State is RETURNING a wobbly weak shanked punt. Not sure if it's Kene, but whoever it is takes it to the house. Assalley stays on the sidelines as CMC elects to go for 2 to push the game a little further out of reach. Brock runs an excellent play action fake to Breece, fakes the run in himself but then finds Kolar in the endzone as the defense converges on him. Iowa State up 21-10 as we reach the end of the 3rd.

Louisiana puts up a little fight when they get the ball back in the 4th. They drive deep into ISU territory but are suddenly faced with a 4th and 3 from the ISU 28 yard line. A FG is a bit out of reach for their kicker, so they go for it. Attempt unsuccessful! Wind is now fully out of their sails, they must get ISU off the field quickly to have any shot. After a couple runs of 2 and 3 yards to kill clock, Purdy goes back to pass on 3rd down. There is some miscommunication with new WR Xavier Hutchinson on a route, Brocks pass falls right into the hands of a Ragin Cajun defender. There is still life on the Louisiana sidelines. They drive back into ISU territory, drive stalls again but this time in the Red Zone. This time, they kick. 21-13 ISU. Time is of the essence, so Louisiana attempts onside kick. Kick fails and ISU recovers. They can kill some clock, but Louisiana has a couple timeouts left. They run a couple plays, both short runs. Louisiana burns their TO's. 3rd down and 6. A first down would seal it. Brock has not been in sync with his WR's save for the quick TD scoring drive in the 3rd quarter, and sporadically in the first half. They go back to the well in the running game, except this time, it's RS FR Jirehl Brock on a draw. Louisiana is sold out to stop the pass! Brock has all kind of daylight and goes for 21 yards before being dragged down inside the Red Zone. Game can officially be put on ice. Victory formation follows, and ISU can move on to better days ahead following a 21-13 victory.

Ugly first game.

If the Clones do not score 40+, it will be a dissapointing day. Lousiana's defense is horrid.
Hate to say it, but 40 would greatly surprise me and I think is out of the question. The goal I think is 30. If they can get to 30 or even 28, they should be fine and win.

Surprised Vegas has lines out prior to final Covid test results. A little inside information could get somebody rich this year.

ISU -11 should cover v. Louisiana. Defense matters. Clones by 14.
Ku -3 v. Coastal Carolina. Lordy knows what Les has under his hat but Ku by 7.
Baylor -17 v. LaTech. Seems like a lot for new staff, BU by 13.
# SMU v. TCU. Upset special right here, c'virus wins this one.
Missouri State v. Oklahoma. Blowout city, folks, OU by 30+.
Eastern Kentucky v. West Virginia. Eers win.
Arkansas State v. K-State. Cats by 17 in newly renovated digs before pre-Snyder sized crowd.
Houston Baptist v. Texas Tech. Relegated to ESPN Plus for good reason, Tech rolls.
Tulsa v. Oklahoma State. Hurricane is for real as Pokes blowout TU by 28.
UTEP at Texas. Another snooze-fest, hook 'em by 30 on no-one-sees-it LHN.

The Athlon article I’m looking at says that UL was 19th in the nation in scoring defense—but 47th in total defense. How’s that work?

That includes 82nd against the run.

For comparison’s sake, ISU’s “leaky“ 2019 defense was 50th in scoring defense while 45th in total defense—47th against the run. Against a tougher schedule.

Athlon says Louisiana returns seven starters on each side of the ball. They (read: CW) give us credit for nine on defense and five on offense.

UL has a good quarterback, but their offense seems heavily skewed to the rushing attack—6th in rushing in the NCAA, but only 62nd in passing, for 10th in scoring offense and 8th in total offense.

Conversely, ISU was 39th in scoring offense and 27th in total offense—while 11th in passing but 102nd in rushing offense. The latterly largely thanks to Breece’s belated breakout.

Now that I looked more closely, I really like this matchup. I mean seriously, when someone flat out dares Jon Heacock to stop the run, that usually turns out well for us.

Let alone with what this defense has coming back!

COVID wins the SMU v. TCU game. Let's hope it is isolated to just that one game. The KU game is interesting...the zero fan thing will be a normal setting for them.

COVID wins? TCU had so many positive tests they had to cancel a week in advance? This far into bubbles?

That sounds like a cluster mess of epic proportions!

It’s going to be a longggggg brutal game. No fans, Louisiana has nothing to lose, they’ll be motivated to play and we won’t.... look at the drake and uni games the past two years. Louisiana is damn good. I can see it going either way. Make sure you add fireball to your beer bongs in hope to just getting this game over with faster.
If we aren’t motivated to play we deserve to lose. Complete non-issue.

We’ll need a half yard to keep a game winning drive alive. We don’t have a qb sneak play. We stall. We lose. Brain Ferentz is happy.

My bet is we're down 27-0 at halftime and Bobby Boucher...um...I mean Mike Rose...shows up at halftime and we rally to a 30-27 win in the Bourbon Bowl...err...MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium.

Sun Belt has been playing really well so far, definitely a little concerned for next week. We’ll be the better team talent wise but not sure that matters in this weird season

Why is that, just expecting a slow start? The offense is widely considered our strongest piece, and LA's defense isn't highly regarded. Not saying they're Monroe, but we put 70+ on them a year ago.
They are way better than Monroe. And we all know how ISU doesn't normally play well in season openers. I think we grind out a close one 34-28 because of all the experience and talent we have will ultimately prevail.
