Somebody is walking by and spitting on my dog

I have a Rott/Lab mix dog who’s about 10 months old. Never could get her to go poop on a leash, so I put her out on a tie-down in the fenced front yard every morning and then again around dinner time. It gives her a chance to do some running around and do her business with some privacy.

About a half dozen times in the last month, when I’ve gone out to bring her back in, I’ve noticed spit or a loogie on her, usually on her face. Tonight it was on her back.

After the second time, my fiancée called the local police department and they said they wouldn’t do anything about it even if we had it on video. I put up a camera anyway, but it goes off for every little movement and the batteries died pretty quickly. I didn’t bother to replace them given what the cops said, but after tonight I’m just fed up. The spit had brown in it like the person was eating chocolate or something.

I’m going to replace the batteries and watch when she’s out from now on, but how should I handle it if I catch someone in the act? What would you do?
Is the dog barking at passersby?

No one is spitting on someone, it's a dog, and I doubt anyone is taking the time and effort to repeatedly spit on a dog in someone's front yard. Even in the unlikely event they are, the dog doesn't care. Why not just tie the dog up in the backyard and go on with your life? I was suggesting in the extremely unlikely event someone is doing this you could try and understand why instead of just looking for revenge like many suggest on here. In contrast cdnlngld had a very rational response.

I agree that it probably isn't someone spitting on the dog but if it is and your response is, so what it's a dog I really hope you don't have a dog or any other pets.

Oh man I just read this thread and it’s a classic! Yeah, obviously it’s the dogs spit. Zero question about that.

I’ll give the original poster a pass since it’s clear it’s their first puppy. Live and learn. But all the responses from the torch wielding mob screaming for vigilante justice against the imaginary sociopathic dog spitter? Cmon, that’s just too damn funny! Message boards at their finest.

Any update from the OP? Did you catch this person or decide it was the dog's own slobber?
Hasn’t happened again yet. I know some are convinced she’s slobbering on herself, but I’ll honestly be pretty surprised if that’s the case. My guess is that it’s the neighborhood tweaker.

I live on the West Coast. It’s not uncommon to see some middle aged dude walking down the street with his shirt off talking to himself around here.

Must be another CF poster. Saw this thread and started feeling the heat.

Does your dog bark all the time when you let it out? Does it chase after people walking by and scare the life out of them? If so, then I’m with the spitter.

I agree that a constant barking dog is crazy annoying and their owner is really disrespectful of their neighborhood.

That said, dogs are going to bark sometimes. My yard is fenced in with a 4 ft wooden picket fence I built specifically for my dogs. I would love for it to be taller, but since my house is on a corner lot, that is all the higher I could get the inspector to allow. There is no backyard we could put them in due to the lot our house sits on. When we hear them bark, we immediately call them inside. I am always outside with them in the spring, summer, and fall and if they are barking, I will go over to where they are and make them sit until whatever has them worked up has moved on. We have tried training, bark collars, etc, but to no avail.

A big part of the problem is that one of my neighbors, who is really a fantastic neighbor, does a lot of work on motorcycles, 4-wheelers, etc. Which, by itself is not a problem at all. But whenever he test drives whatever it is he is working on, it never fails that he floors it past my house in low gear driving up the RPMs so much that the windows in my house rattle. It scares the **** out of my dogs and has resulted in them being on guard when out in the yard.

Both are fantastic on a leash, and respond to verbal commands pretty well - the St. Bernard is kind of bullheaded, and ignores my wife, but responds very well to me.

I welcome any ideas CF may have.

Was this mystery ever solved?
Oddly, it still hasn’t happened again yet after happening several times over the course of a month or so.

One thing I didn’t mention in the original post is that there’s a guy across the street who goes out on his porch and smokes. He was outside the last time it happened (the night I made the post) and I yelled across the street when I was getting my dog to ask, “Hey, did you happen to see somebody walk by and spit on my dog?”

He hesitated for a second and just said “no”, so I responded “Well, it’s happened several times lately”. My fiancée really didn’t think it was him and I didn’t really either (there are other, more likely suspects in the neighborhood), but two and a half weeks later my dog hasn’t been spit on once. Sure makes me wonder.

This guy hesitated because he thinks you are crazy.
