Congrats on the hire, Cyclones! Excited to see how Campbell does at ISU. Young guy with a record of success that's done will in tough jobs.

I know recruiting is tougher from Ames, but ISU has the pieces to be competitive. Very strong and loyal fan base despite recent struggles, good facilities, etc. Baylor and TCU have geography, but it's not like they built up competitive programs with only 4 & 5 star recruits. Snyder has found success from Manhattan. The sports media makes the ISU job seem impossible. But it's definitely not.

Hope Campbell gets it done for y'all. Next year is a good one to rotate in a new staff. With some good personnel coming back, he'll have a great chance to up the win total in year 1, get to a bowl and immediately create some strong momentum.

I'm sorry but what more experience is needed than two people who

1. Know what it takes to get to the next level

2. Have experienced the coaching at the next level

I don't understand why he wouldn't

Five year clock/ four years of competition. If they get a hardship waiver, they also have to keep 5 yr clock in mind. Problematic for guys like bundrage who already took a redshirt year. To get one then, he would need to prove he lost two seasons to injury.

Reading the Toledo message boards and they think he is dumb for taking the job. I don't think they really know what a P5 job is, even here, compared to the MAC. Their record attendance is lower than our worst games and current capacity is less than half of JT.

SiriusXM Scoreboard Show reported the Matt Campbell to ISU story moments ago, along with some surprise that he did not hold out for a higher profile job.

Hold on, I thought we were interviewing position coaches from Appalachian State and Buffalo.

Really like the way Toledo was willing to make Campbell the highest paid coach in the MAC. Knowing that they couldn't match Isu and even if it's not true, smart move by the athletic department for getting that out there.

How can we be serious about football given our proximity and history? Think about it, we play in a conference with 4 Texas schools and 2 Oklahoma schools ALL pulling better recruits from their area than we could ever get. Then you got West Virginia, who has some history and their own recruiting base. What's left is us, KU, and KSU. KSU has had some success so we're disadvantaged there, leaving us and Kansas getting 2 and 3 star recruit leftovers. Let alone not being the best team or at times even the 2nd best team in our own state (UNI), slim pickings for recruits equal no success no matter the coach.

I watched western michigan / toledo game and had a few quick observations:

-Toledo QB didn't go under center once.
-They used the "line up at ball...set...check to sideline...reset...hike ball" gimmick.
-3rd and 7 used 5-wide set.
-western michigan did about that same things. the game looked like a carbon copy of a typical big 12 matchup.

And I must say...after watching I was much less enthused about the potential hire. It seems like more of the same thing. Toledo also ran a 3-4 type defense so personnel demands should be similar to current roster situation as well.

I'd hoped ISU would have been a little more unconventional and out-of-the-box than this but hopefully it works. Would have loved to have seen a more pro-style under center type approach... but I'm just a fan. They're coaches and AD's for a reason. I guess I just gotta trust they know what they're doing. So Cheers! Game on...

No reason to be defeatist about it. Not like we play in the sun belt conference (yet). We have recruiting disadvantages, but even with poor recent results we managed to build a nice nucleus of talent (Lazard, Lanning, Warren, Cotton-Moya) to build from. Granted, most of Campbell's opponents weren't P5 quality, but he did win at Arkansas and beat us, and it's not like he had better recruits than we could expect to get. So obviously he can develop and coach up to make up for recruiting deficiencies.

Honestly, if Iowa can build a team that has the ability to go 12-0, and if Kansas State can have the success they have had... even Kansas won the Orange Bowl a few years ago... there's no reason we shouldn't expect to have a successful season (even if success is 6 or 7 wins a year, not 12). We may never win a national championship, but consistent bowl eligibility is feasible and should be expected.

We have invested and have awesome facilities. We have great fan support. We are making more money than ever via our TV contracts. We have shown the ability to win signature games in the past, and while we aren't in a recruiting hotbed, those things that we have invested in make a difference. All it takes is a start and then a little bit of sustained effort. If we can make (and win) a couple bowl games in the next couple years, we will be well on our way.

While I still have some reservations, the thing that makes me most satisfied with the hire is that this was Pollard's #1 choice, and from what we've heard, everyone else was far behind.

-They used the "line up at ball...set...check to sideline...reset...run play" gimmick.

What I've heard (and remember from seeing them the past couple years) is they run a spread style offense, but run the ball with a lot more emphasis and success. Whereas Warren is our first 1000 yard rusher since A-Rob in 2009, I believe that Campbell has had one every year he's been a head coach (so long as his current RB gets 100 yards in the bowl game this year). If we run the spread, but open it up with a successful running attack, it can still be very successful in this conference.

I was hoping for a power-run guy too, but honestly, we could have done a lot worse. Don't forget that we have some excellent young WR talent and Lanning to use too--going triple option (for example) with the talent we have might have been the wrong thing to do, at least in the short term. I think this will end up being a good hire.

On your second point, I can see them doing this less with a decent QB. If the Toledo QB could've thrown a medium range pass with any accuracy they would've blown ISU out earlier this year.

Has he produced any NFL draft prospects? Player development needs to be his greatest skill set.
