I'm excited that this movie will be about the ground fighting and not lightsabers. I always enjoyed star wars battlefront PS2 because it was about fighting as a soldier not a jedi. will be a cool look to the film.

Looks like there will be some X-wings sprinkled in as well. Star Wars has been lacking in quality space battles since Return of the Jedi.

I'm not too hopeful. People made the same excuse about the derivative nature of the first Star Trek reboot film only for them to... go right into a lame Wrath of Khan remake.

JJ Abrams is a hack who makes incoherent, derivative pap.

The propensity of modern, big ticket films to be direct remakes, remakes in everything but name, or just a repetition of "big bad guy wants revenge" (ripping off Wrath of Khan, among others) and/or "big bad doomsday weapon" (ripping off A New Hope, amid others) plot doesn't leave me much hope that these films are going to be anything but big, loud, but ultimately boring and soulless. I never thought I'd say this, but I'd almost PREFER the prequels... incompetently executed, sure, but at least they brought some new ideas and themes to the table.
Tell us how you really feel.

I'm fully aware of literary theory. I do have an English minor from our beloved ISU.

There's parallels and influences, and then there's literally every character, plot element, and basically every scene has a 1:1 parallel mostly with IV and somewhat with V and VI.

I'm also fully aware that Lucas borrowed from/ripped off extensively from...

The Hero with a Thousand Faces
The Lord of the Rings
Dune
The Hidden Fortress
Flash Gordon
The Dam Busters
Lawrence of Arabia
Triumph of the Will
The Ring Cycle

And if you throw the prequels in there, there were strong elements of...

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
Foundation
(the Asimov series)
Ben Hur (the podracers)
Metropolis
Casablanca

...and several others.

Thing is... Lucas borrow bits and pieces from these all, mixing them together, adding his own, new ideals, and eventually forging a new whole.

The only influence on The Force Awakens seems to have been the other Star Wars films. That's the definition of lacking in creativity, and hence my denouncement of it as a bad start, a bad foundation, and glorified clip show/self-referencing failure that I did not enjoy.

I mean, how hard would it have been for them to go and get some old Buck Rogers serial and lift the plot and take the galaxy a long time ago, far, far away someplace new? Someplace that we didn't even know we wanted until we saw its wonder?

Instead we got stuff the world has had since 1977 and we've had all our lives.

Not only that, but an inferior knockoff version.

A third (THIRD!!!) Death Star and another trench run isn't a parallel. It's super lazy.
Jesus.

Do you also get mad when musicians say they take notes and have been inspired by other musicians?

I'm trying to understand if this is actual rage, or if you just like making a scene.

I'm willing to forget those ever happened if they want to redo them.
I pretend the prequals don't exist. Apparently they are pretending the prequels didn't happen either if Jyn's father is responsible for the construction of the Death Star when the prequels told us those stupid bug aliens were the ones responsible for it. I'm sure they will have an explanation for it since those movies are canon, but I would be perfectly happy if they just said **** it and retconned it.

That would be the biggest middle finger ever to George Lucas. I am doubtful they will remake them but as another poster said, they are just going to act like the prequels never even happened and build new storylines.

I think it has been rumored that Jyn's dad was used to create the power behind the weapon, but the bugs designed most of the Death Star. Even in the Attack of the Clones, I think it is implied that they are still working on designing and creating the Death Star.

I think they can safely come up with a backstory that the bugs started building it, and maybe were even the workers throughout, but that an imperial (human) hand was needed to oversee it. After all, by the end of Ep. III all the separatist leaders have been killed by Anakin, including the leader of the bugs.

Yeah, I've heard he is attached to the development of the weapon as well.

Anyone else totally miss this as well? Every time I saw the trailer I totally missed it was a fallen Jedi statue.
