Starting qb...

I think it's GR. To my (admittedly untrained) eye, he has the stronger arm and more confidence, so more upside. He seemed to get better as he played more last year. I think SR's advantages were the extra year in the system and being cautious while operating behind a shaky line. Now GR has had the time and the reps and I think his arm wins the job.

I could be wrong. Last year I thought SR would be really great, but between injuries, the line play, etc it just didn't work out.

The o-line is the key no matter who starts. It's like that old saying "momma ain't happy, nobody happy".

"O-line ain't good, nobody good".

Mangino will run whatever system is best for the personnel we have, which probably has a lot to do with the best QB. If Richardson or Rohach emerge as the starter, than less designed runs. If Lanning emerges as the starter than it will be more of a zone read based system.

Interested to hear why you think we'll be more of a zone read system with Lanning. He has the best arm on the team by far.

Bigger guy who can take the hits while running. His high school completion percentage wasn't great, so if accuracy problems continue it's probably not the best idea to put the ball in the air all that often.

With Bibbs, Bundrage, Daley, Montgomery, and West (and the other WRs), the ball will be in the air often..........

We had all but one of those guys last season. How'd that work out? If Lanning is capable of throwing the ball all day great, but if not he certainly has his legs and size to fall back on in the running game.

I would suggest going back and watching some Mangino style offense (from his years at Kansas; or waiting a week and a half for the Spring scrimmage). He has never ran much "zone read" with his QBs running the ball. What he has done (in the past) is shown a propensity to like to throw the ball to big WRs. He has also liked larger sized RBs If Coach Mangino goes with what he has done in the past, we will be seeing the ball in the air (a fair amount). I guess we can wait and see.

I trust Paul Rhoads

but seriously, I think Grant deserves the job at this moment. Sam plays too safe and doesn't make enough plays. Sure, he doesn't make a ton of mistakes but our defense isn't good enough to play like that. I was never a big fan of Jantz but at least in the midst of his mistakes he'd make some incredible plays to win ball games.

The QB musical chairs we play is laughable.

On both of these...remember we have a totally new offensive staff...both might be a thing of the past.

We played musical chairs because the offense was failing and we were desperate for a spark. At worse, a Mangino offense will still be at least respectable. Musical chairs is a thing of the past.

That may be because of the OC. Mess was huge on not turning the ball over and making all the simple plays. Even though our guys were more successful when they had big plays to spark the drive, he still refused to throw the ball down field. My guess is a lot of Sam's issues had to do with something Mess wanted.

Kind of a toss up between Sam and Grant. Sam definitely played against the tougher part of the schedule and was hurt. Grant didn't look very good until the last 2 games.....against Kansas and WVU. So who knows. Just hope our receivers can catch the damn ball. We dropped lots of passes last year. Which was disappointing. Because we would have some bad throws and then hit a receiver square in the hands and he would drop it. IMO, the biggest improvement will be Mangino.

I think Richardson, Rohach, or Lanning are reasonable to be honest. If the line play is improved and we are able to run the football more effective than last season, either three of these guys should be fine. If I had to guess? Richardson.

One thing that I always noticed about Mangino's offense at KU, their WRs all blocked really well. They'd run WR screens and get 6 yards a pop because their blockers would seal off the DBs every time.

Magino's choice is the only one that matters, but I like Sammy to be the starter.
Both have won two games.
Both have game experience, both know how to lead, just who can provide the "BEST" chance to win.
Glad we have them both, over the season we will need them both to go "BOWLING."
Go Cyclones!!!!

Lolz! Or, it was because Sam was getting crushed all the time.

Or--and far more likely--it was simply a load of horsey hooey in the first place. Sam made plenty of plays--especially when he wasn't tottering on one leg.

Did you ever listen to an interview with Mess? It was pretty clear he was big on limiting turnovers, which is okay, but it appeared Sam played tentative because of it.

I know you like Mess. I'm sure Mess is a good guy, but he was seriously lacking as a coordinator in the Big 12. Hence the reason he is no longer employed at Iowa State.
