State of ISU MBB if we had hired Otz instead of Prohm?

I’m excited about TJ and glad he didn’t have to deal with the effed up roster that Hoiberg left behind. Great news I’m leaving you a ton of talented juniors and seniors, the bad news is I haven’t been recruiting the last two years so good luck balancing the roster after those guys graduate.

I don't blame Hoiberg for Prohm's failure. He had enough time. What he rolled out on the floor the past two seasons was a freaking joke. That's all on him.

I wasn't sure if this thread would get this much traction because it's probably the stupidest basketball related thread ever.

Well, maybe behind these classics:

State of ISU Basketball if they.....

Had hired John Wooden.

Had landed Michael Jordan.

Etc.
Do you know who ISU hired over coach K?

Prohm’s roster went 2-22.

Upsets happen in the NCAA Tourney all the time. That argument doesn't hold water. It's silly but that's all the Prohm apologists have left. Fred suffered an upset in the NCAA Tournament. So did coach K.

Prohm was not great but blaming him for McKay getting butthurt over program rules is on Mckay.

Exactly,
From what I gather Fred ran. Loose ship, players could basically do whatever as long as they showed up to play gameday.

Unless I'm misremembering I thought Coach K was going to come here until Duke offered him. After that ISU hired Orr.

I’m not sure that’s exactly right. My understanding is Bob Knight recommended him not necessarily that he was that close to coming here.

I think, from what I remember, that you are more or less correct. I feel like Coach K was pretty interested in coming here, but we can blame Bobby Knight for convincing him to wait on Duke and give them a good, long look.

Greatest "What if...?" in ISU athletic history.

They have a pill for that.

My biggest concern with TJ continues to be gametime coaching. In that, he is pretty damn similar to Steve. TJ also has brought in considerable talent...Steve did to, but Steve failed by not recruiting immediately, riding on Fred's talent. I'm enthused by who TJ has brought in as assistants and that should help player development...that and you would hope that TJ has worked to improve his gametime coaching. We will see...

Having Green next to him is a big comfort. Fred hired an experienced coach as an assistant his first year, smart move.

I would only imagine TJ would have had a great staff in 2015, too, but we will never know.

Seems like Chris had a post on the premium board a while back about who he lined up. It was a good one.

Yeah, trying to hint at that without giving away the farm.

I think we have a good one now, though. Having Kyle Green around makes me feel a lot better.

Shame Prohm couldn't have just hired him (and brought AJ in) a few years ago.

He would probably still be our coach now if he had.

This lineup isn't winning many accolades but...

Green
Bolton
Coleman-Lands
Johnson
Young

...it might win a few games, at least.

That hire was a cross road moment for Prohm. Choosing Kane over Green who were considered the two favorites at hte time and both worth of the spot. It re-emphizied the focus on recrtuiting the south and pushed AJ to UNI. Prohm is loyal and I understand why he went with Kane who is a solid coach but it didn't get the recruits to sustain the program.

Kane came onboard before the 2019-2020 season. I think the list of guys he recruited is...

Luke Anderson
Dudley Blackwell
Blake Hinson
Trey Jackson
Javan Johnson

...if I remember correctly. Anderson, Blackwell, and Jackson were off his southern connections out of high school and Hinson plus Johnson were transfers who had previous (recruitment) relationships with Kane.

Of those...

Anderson and Blackwell were total busts.

Jackson is maybe a high-ceiling/low-floor bench guy on a good team.

Johnson... jury is still out on him being viable in the Big 12.

Hinson we haven't seen, but, if healthy, is likely going to be the best of them.

That is 0/5 on landing confirmed contributors, though this could go as high as 3/5 depending on how the rest of the careers of Jackson, Johnson, and Hinson go in Ames. Not exactly a stellar track record.

Just AJ alone would have surpassed any of this before you account for Green's Minnesota and Midwest recruiting and what he might have been able to teach to our absolutely struggling big men the past three years.

Let's be honest, the roster left for Prohm in his first year was loaded and would have easily made the NCAA tournament coaching themselves (which Georges appeared to be doing half the time anyways). To finish 10-8 in conference with a Sweet 16 over 12&13 seed was the floor for that group. Could Otz have done a better job? Most likely. I find it very unlikely that Otz or any person could've done worse.

With the little time Otz has been here, he's done outstanding, A+. Let's hope that success will continue during the season and years to come!

Even after the rough years lately he still has a .618 overall win % as a head coach and look at how many players he put in the NBA here despite the disappointing seasons.

While seeing Cyclones play in the NBA is fun and I'm rooting for all of them, we're paying our head coach to put together a good IOWA STATE bball team. The latter of which Prohm failed to do several of the past few years, if we we're paying him to produce great NBA players then by all means THT and Tyrese alone would've given him outstanding job performance.
