An interesting question. I maintain that a healthy Steele is a pretty good quarterback. I bet he'll get a chance at the starting job.

Jantz should be done as the starter barring injury. It's not that he's not talented enough to start, its just that this team plays much better with the ball control offense that JB brings to the table. Jantz offers more reward but much more risk, if I were JB and didn't start I'd be gone.

Seriously??? I'm glad you're not on my team. You definitely put the I in team. Steele can offer things JB can't and vis a versa. Their performance and success this year were very similar. JB is good at ball control, Steele is good at opening up the field. They both turned the ball over a lot! Whoever improves enough to eliminate most of the turnovers should start. I wouldn't be surprise to see injuries bring starts to both again next year. The zone read can be tough on quarterbacks. I have no idea if SR will be ready next year.

You know we can use Jantz as a game manager like we did with Barnett right? They knew Jantz has big time ability and tried getting that going. He was able to overcome his mistakes up until the point when he got hurt and couldn't play to his full potential.

Pretty much any QB that just steps on campus will struggle. They almost always get better after more experience and time in the system. There is no reason to think Jantz wont be better after another full year here learning everything. Hes a lot more raw than Barnett, and has the room to get a hell of a lot more better than what Barnett does.

Stats were pretty equal but JB has immeasurables that don't show up on the stat sheet. These are the things that separate players with equal or lesser talent (as some will say in comparing JB to Steele). Also, I think many will agree that as he "managed" the games he showed great leadership, composure, confidence, heart, and determination. Plus he exhibited great faith and trust in his teammates and vise versa. When a QB possesses these qualities, it's hard for a team not to play hard for him. So, if you're wondering why the team looked more efficient with a lesser QB out there, I would point to these qualities. I'm not saying Steele doesn't posses these qualities. I'm saying JB exhibited them and the team responded.

I think it is pretty clear that Steele was hurt much worse than they let on. I have no idea if that played a part in the turnovers, certainly at times he looked like he had trouble planting and maybe his accuracy suffered. He is the only one that knows I am sure. I am also almost certain it hurt his mobility a lot, which in our offense, is a real killer.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I would think Barnett has the edge, but who knows, Steele already beat him out once.

I would not rule him out, the guy lived in his truck for awhile and overcame a severe injury just to make it this far. I do not get the impression he is the kind of guy that is just going to lay down and let Barnett have it.

there will be a 3 horse race for qb in spring ball:
jb
steele jantz
sam richardson.

there willl be a good race for the running back slot:
james white sj, if he comes back from injury
nealy
standard. standard could end up being an outstanding running back next year
and duck could be in the rb competition, too.jeff woody will be the red zone back..
we should have some good defensive linemen and de's next fall, too.

I think Jantz will have just as much of an opportunity to compete for the starting QB job as anyone. IMO though, it's JB's job to lose.

Defense wasn't as good in the first 6 games as it was in the last 6.....don't forget about that.

Agree. IMO, that could have possibly been due to less TO's and less 3 and outs. Our Defense was allowed to catch their breath.

IMO, JB was better at the Zone Read and a lot of little things. Stats don't tell the whole story. Otherwise Tebow would still be riding the bench at Denver.

I would agree with pretty much all of this.

However, I'd add that Steele showed all of these traits prior to the injury.

I'm not advocating one or the other, but both guys made some seriously clutch plays. The 4th quarter v. UNI and the entire Iowa game was nothing but Steele Jantz delivering in "___ and ball game" type situations. He made some plays that I don't think JB could make, and that would be due to Steele's edge as a pure athlete.

However, I think some of those big plays were necessitated by poor decisions he made earlier in the game that required us to dig out of a hole he created. JB has yet to put us behind the 8 ball. He's made plenty of mistakes, but we never had to claw out of a hole like we had to under Jantz at times.

I've never felt as good about the QB situation going into next year. We have 2 guys who have proven on the field that they can make big plays and step up in the clutch, and we have a highly touted freshman behind them. Nothing but good can come of it.

Steele wasn't ready to start in the Big 12 IMO. It's unfortunate he was put in that situation but we didn't have much choice. I think you'll see him improved quite a bit, just like Barnett will be. I think it will take a lot for Jared to lose his starting spot but Jantz still has a chance.

I don't think Richardson will be a factor in 2012. Too soon and zero experience. I can't envision him beating out a healthy Steele or Jared.
But a new OC could level the experience factor somewhat.

the offense under Jared seemed to have fewer 3 and outs which helped the Cyclone Defense tremendously, Steele made some great plays and also won some games...my sense is if Steele was in the mix as an equal competitor for time, he would have gotten some snaps in late action vs Oklahoma to see what he could do and help reeastablish his confidence. Jared got the job presumably due to injury/ineffectiveness and kept it by winning some games and keeping his teams in other games. No reason to think that won't continue
I don't think so. Game experience is almost impossible to overvalue. You don't just throw it around -- you give it to your starter.

I can probably see this. I think the OSU win gives JB the "if it's close it's JB" factor. A bowl victory would add to that.

Worthy to note that steele hasn't seen a snap since being replaced. At some point you can't keep placing this on the injury. I think rhoads is more comfortable with JB.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if Jantz can manage the game as well as JB. JB has the benefit of 5 years of experience (since his HS Soph year) as QB of a spread offense. He has made many more reads on the read option than Jantz has over the past year or so. There were several times in the first few games (before Jantz got hurt) that he made the wrong read on the option. More often that not he just made the handoff when he could have had a lot of daylight on the keep. This is something he can improve on with more practice, but JB will probably still be better at it. Zone read is a staple of our offense.
JB also seemed to make better decisions in the passing game. Jantz made some terrific throws but he also made some bad decisions that lead to 3 and outs or turnovers. I think JBs efficiency is what helped the offense and defense keep us in games.

Jantz will have a shot to win the job, but the coaches wont forget what happened with bullets flying. JB is a lot less erratic out there while Jantz has more highs and lows. I remember early in the season that CPR said he wanted the team to stay on more of an even keel. He wanted to peak and plataeu rather than peak and immediately drop down. (Not sure the exact wording anymore). If what CPR said is true, I think that points more to a game manager rather than a gunslinger.

I'm really looking forward to this offseasons QB competition.

I still don't buy that. It's a convenient excuse, but it's way too easy.

We saw offense and defense trade 3 and outs for 3 consecutive series in an early game. Following that, the offense went on a long, sustained drive which gave the defense plenty of rest. The D responded by giving up a quick touchdown.

The D helped kill off the Texas game before the offense even saw the field.

Early on, the defense was just way too soft. They didn't need the offense's help to collapse, and often collapsed while the offense was doing its part.

Wow, you remember that game a lot different than I do.

Offensive drives were punt, Fumble, Special teams Fumble on Kickoff return, interception by Jantz. So three TO's and one punt and ISU trailed by 13 and the end of Q1.

A missed feild goal by ISU followed by a stupid penalty allowing TX a 1st down on 3rd and long put the clones down by 20 on a long pass. ISU then TO on downs, TX punt followed by ISU 3 and out with the punt returned for a TD and the route was on.

The D made some stupid mistakes and was called for a couple of BS penalties but in my eyes the TX game was lost on Special teams and TO's byt the offense.

I think it will be interesting to see who the new OC is and what kind of things he wants the QB to do. I imagine the new system will be similar but there is bound to be new wrinkles and new points of emphasis. Whichever QB is more adaptable will win.
