I know you weren't downgrading the position, but there's more to it than just lifting some weights. On the surface, it may seem easy to an outsider looking in... Lifting weights, running, making people sweat, etc.. But your good S & C coaches will have a great understanding and knowledge of the physiology, biomechanics, motor control, and nutrition to capitalize on all possible accounts. Periodization and Conjugate training methods are widely used in strength and coniditioning, knowing how to do those correctly and efficiently are very important. Proper form on all lifts is very important, something a lot of uneducated people may not know about. Knowing how to correctly perform a squat, power clean, clean and jerk to an exact "T" vs sloppily doing it will yield huge differences on the field.I agree with everything you said there. But how in the world is any of that difficult? Nothing you just said can't be done by someone with a little education, training and experience. That was my point. I wasn't trying to down grade the job...just make a point that, well, its not rocket science. Don't just go out and hire some schmuck but lets be honest here, PR knows what he's doing and he'll bring in a guy that will get the job done.
I agree. I remember McCarney saying once that the S&C coach (Getty) spent more time with the players than any on-field coach. I'm not into lifting, but if you want someone who just has the players do arms on Monday and Thursday, legs on Tuesday and cardio on Saturday, then yeah, those guys are a dime a dozen. What they need is someone who can tailor the program for each player, focus workouts on improving them at their position and evaluate bodies to project and acheive the optimum size, quickness and speed combination.
Also, the S&C coach needs to be part of the recruiting strategy on official and unofficial visits.
Maybe the problem is PR cannot find the right person. Many people's jobs are set. Dollars may be short. People may not lioje to relocate in Jan to Ames. Seems like it is more than time to make an announcement. At the same time, two grad assistants subbing does not sound like an acceptable solution. Why would you not pay to have an interim professional fill in starting last week? After reading gow everybody took the holidays off reminded me of the fact we did not have a bowl game and we should have done much more lifting than what was reported. With our smaller in eweight guys who need to put on weight, the nutrition choices should be monitored. Seems like the last S&C left a month ago. I do not know if PR can afford to wait for the Pittsburgh extraodinaire Mr. M to see if he has other offers. We need to move on. Heck, we have had a revovlving door of S&Cs in the last three years.
