Structural question about JTS

Last time I sat in the upper deck, East side was Danny Mac's first game as a Clone. That was, until the Iowa game this year.
The upper deck was swaying like crazy before kickoffs when the music was playing and students were jumping around. I'm not talking just a little vibration. I'm talking like bona fide shaking to the point that a few fans actually left the 40 yl seats to sit on the more sturdy hillside.
For those of you that normally sit over there? is this normal?
Lights on that side were shaking like crazy too.

I wouldn't sit there, the new scoreboard might BLOW over on you if we have a strong wind...We all know that has a structural problem.

It did the same thing when Luther Blue ran a kick-off back against NU in 1976 (7?)

Back in the day...students sat in upper deck east side mid field. One of first night games at JTS was Oklahoma. I was in front row 50 yard line upper deck and it was moving up and down several inches. My roommate was in one of those engineering classes and ask professor about who proceeded to make a class project to determine how much the the deck could flex up and down before its breaking point. Can't say I remember it precisely, but net it was more than a foot maybe two or three.

So yeah....its safe.

Lots of buildings in quake zones are built like this. They are built to move so that when a quake hits, the building will be able to take a good amount of movement without coming apart. At basic training, our buildings were built like that and when a platoon was getting smoked below us, the entire building would shake. My assumption is that the same type of technique was used at Jack Trice.

Ever been to a game at Camp Randall? That place feels like it's going to fall over too. We don't think of things like concrete being flexible but it is.

I was sitting up there too for the Iowa game. It is hard to believe concrete was built to flex that much. Re-rod I'm sure plays a huge part.

Stadium collapses have happened in various places before. Iirc

Gotta say, we sit upper level 50 yard line and the iowa game was the first time I remember it shaking like that. I was telling my brother-in-law (hawk fan) about it and he said he wished the thing would have caved in. Ummm...so you wish I would have died along with hundreds if not thousands of others? I know you're ****** about the game, but...

It is always good to make sure our Athletics Department management knows about things like this, so I would like to encourage anyone noticing such issues to let our AD know. I did forward your post to him on this matter and his response was that there have been previous structural tests conducted (results were good) and that an engineering firm has been and is delving into this currently, so it appears we're on top of it.

I was there for the Ohio State game last year. When Wisconsin took that opening kickoff to the house it felt like an earthquake. I have felt stadiums shake before but that was crazy.

What a waste of good energy for the Toledo game. Can this energy be harnessed?
