Tamin Lipsey's back, but Keshon Gilbert won't be for third-seeded ISU in the NCAA Tournament

The similarities are in your rationale for why he didn’t play against BYU- a lack of upside.

You implied an increased chance of beating BYU wasn’t worth playing Lipsey due to how important having him as healthy as possible for the next week. Which in essence means the Big 12 tournament in itself has low value, as you implied on the podcast.

The primary reason you want to win that game is to incrementally increase odds in the NCAA tournament. It’s all about this week.

AND Gilbert’s availability is clearly in jeopardy.

If you can’t close out an 8 point lead against Cincinnati without Lipsey, he’s that important, and it’s all about the NCAA, why is he playing to begin with?

There’s NCAA benefits to playing a lineup that sadly will likely be needed in the most important part of the season, in a situation like the 8 point lead in the final minutes of the Cincinnati game

Being forthright, I was already of the opinion that the maximalist approach, which works great to get on the bubble, was compromising our ability to peak in March. Managing the roster is not easy. A stated belief in load management not having a place in college basketball is manifesting in several ceiling capping things right now. And it was predictable since the early signs of wear started showing in January
That is quite the pedantic post there.

Tamin healthy is the thing we need. We have a shot at doing great things with Tamin healthy and knowing the lineup and who we got. That’s why TJ put an end to speculation. Here is what we got and what we are rolling with, let’s go. Players know now, fans know. Let’s roll Cyclones

Sounds like he’s spitting a lot of false logic and whataboutisms to make him sound like the smartest person in the room.

He's using a lot of unnecessary words to essentially say nothing. It seems like he wants to argue that we should have sat Lipsey against Cincinnati, which doesn't really make a lot of sense given Lipsey was healthy going into that game. Lipsey got sat once Lipsey was hurt. I could understand his argument as it applies to KG -- who was already hurt -- but not Lipsey.

Blum hit the nail on the head imo. Better to rule Keshon out now, knowing he’s not going to be 100% the rest of the year and remove the distraction.

He’s been off and on the court since February 22nd, almost a month ago. There’s max 3 weeks left in the season. He’s not going to be healthy the rest of the year. There’s nothing more to it than that.

If he was being a malcontent, TJ would have removed him from the team ala Grill. Keshon was front and center with everyone during the selection show, smiling and seemingly happy. His tweet backs that up.

And to everyone saying “this is the NCAA tournament, you play through injuries” he’s been TRYING to play through it the last month. And he’s been a liability with turnovers and lack of explosiveness. If he’s hurting the team, there’s no reason to “play through it”

I honestly wish Williams and Blum hadn’t even given credence to the theory floating that there is more to this than an injury. There is tons of evidence that there isn’t anything else going on. It’s not fair to Keshon.

And another piece of constructive criticism for CW and less-so Blum. I get being disappointed about the Keshon news, but the tone of the pod didn’t need to be that depressing. I think even CW said he was depressed.

I’m still a bit surprised on why everyone locally is surprised by the Keshon news. Keshon has been in and out for a month now. And Fran Fraschilla during the BYU broadcast literally said, “I’m not sure we’re going to see Keshon in an ISU uniform again” due to the injury. Numerous posters, who had no inside info, on here were saying, “anything we get from Keshon in the tourney is going to be gravy”. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to know this was a possibility, and maybe even the likelihood.

For someone as plugged in as CW to act like this was a shock and really set a depressing tone for the pod, I’m pretty surprised by that honestly. Is our ceiling lower? Certainly. But most people, I think, understood that. We can still have a nice tourney run (if Tamin is healthy). The world isn’t ending. Come on man.

Let’s say ISU is up 54-30 with 8 minutes to go in the first game. Do they rest Tamin, Cujo, and Jefferson ?
First of all, they'll likely score far more than 54 by then, and absolutely yes you do rest as many critical players as possible especially the two guards.

It was obvious he was in pain and couldn't keep up when he was in during his last game. In hindsight, would have been better to shut him completely down for the last month of the season, event that may not have made a difference. The good news is the team has learned to adjust over this last month. He is a big part of why we were 15-1. Hopefully we have the horses to get back to that level now. Probably not, but a guy can hope. Super worried Tamin's injury will limit him. In that case, we are toast.

Completely agree with everything you're saying. It sucks ISU isn't 100% with Gilbert and Lipsey. The team easily had Final Four capabilities with a fully healthy roster. Yes, it sucks Gilbert is out and Lipsey likely won't be 100%

But that's the cards we have been dealt. This is still a very talented team. And they can make a run in the tournament, but it will be much more difficult vs having a healthy team. Regardless, it's time to support the team and get ready for the best couple weeks of the season

With that all being true, it was just odd how TJ handled the ‘traveling with team?‘ question. Why not just say he’ll be on the bench supporting his team like he did in KC?

Hines seems to like to make it sound like there could be more in his latest article online for the rag.

It was a weird non-answer to the traveling question, but it we'll find out pretty quick if he makes the trip or not. Regardless, have enjoyed watching him and appreciate what he brought to the program. Feel bad for him to have this injury like this.

Agreed, he got hurt, he played through it, now its worse and people could be looking to assign blame. And now nothing can be done to fix it.

What happened behind the scenes could be a blessing, Hassel is right saying 'we have a ton of good players' and people stepped up to the occasion in KC. There is hope for F4 and we could lose Friday.

I believe the Cincinnati game was far more important, in terms of seeding, than the BYU rematch.

Sometimes I wonder if you are ZRF, renamed.

Give me a rational explanation for why he might not travel with the team

Not with Lipscomb being an elite 3 point shooting team.

If course it was.

What did you think was meant by “the primary reason you want to win that game (Cincinnati) is to incrementally increase odds in the NCAA tournament (better seed)?

But it’s all about the Tournament as you are implying.

With the clear uncertainty in Gilbert, having Lipsey healthy is a bigger determinant in tournament prospects than seed, and that’s ASSUMING not holding the lead against Cincinnati occurred AND it mattering to the committee.

By the time you reach the conference tournament, the hay is in barn. Soon you’ll see teams essentially opting out by resting prominent players imo
