The question is, COULD Hayden Fry have had the success he did WITHOUT following Commings (with everything happening the way that it did, including Kinnick improvements, etc.)? Moreover, what would Fry's record have been had he taken over IU at the time that Commings did?

Bob Commings quote: "It's a tougher job than I figured. No one outside of coaching has a concept of what it takes. I guess the answer still is that it takes time. There are so many things involved."

Or could he have done it without Snyder and Alvarez? Two guys that know how to turn things around. Did they learn it from Hayden or was Hayden just a hell of an assistant coach hirer.... (stoops turned OU around, Snyder KSTATE , Alvarez Wisconsin, McCarney ISU) they all seemed to employee the same strategy.

Wow...

Considering that both Snyder and Alvarez were coaching high schools when Hayden hired them seems like they both learned a lot from Fry before taking over their respective programs. It's not like Fry went out and hired two hot shot coordinators from big name schools.

So in reading many posts over the past season or two I see these observations:
-ISU is losing
-NONE of our fans like it, (Even though people think that if you are still going to games you must accept losing)
-Some fans want to make a change NOW
-Most fans want CPR to succeed, (Only a handful on here I think are just done with CPR. If CPR had a miraculous season, think 2000, next year I think 99.5% of us would believe it was because we stuck behind our guys)
-We are playing bodies that shouldn't be starting in the Big XII today, (This is the biggest source of argument)

Now, we need to face the reality that unless CPR steps down on his own we can't afford to get rid of him. It's also fact that it's because of CPR and JP that we've closed the gap on our opponents.

With the above statement the question to me is how do you change the facts above? None of us are on staff so we can't directly do a damn thing. What we can do is fund the issue. If you want Rhoads gone, fund his buy out. If you want CPR here, buy season tickets and support the Gridiron club.

I truly believe that CPR can bring this program back, but like many programs we need a little luck in recruiting, injuries, turnovers, etc. We need to get to the point where our project players get the time in the program to grow. Look at Jevohn Miller as a prime example. Just a few more off the top of my head were Jesse Smith, Jake McDonough, Jake Williams, Josh Lenz, etc... Between defections, injuries, recruiting misses, we are where we are in year 6. I think that CPR and company know what they need and made a lot of mistakes in the first few years. First time head coaches do that. This program needs stability to have long term success. The question, that most of us have answered, is whether CPR will be able to get us there.

***New excuse alert***
CPR is a micro manager, and he has his hand on every football-related project going on. I'm wondering if he spends too much time on these things and not giving his whole attention to the team issues. I know, crazy thought, but I just know this is a program that needs nonstop dedication to the small things, ala Bill Snyder, to resurrect this program.

We are just now putting all of these recruiting and development tools around one of our own guys. This is the reason that I choose to support this staff and will believe he will fix these things as long as he is our coach. If we can somehow move on and try a new hire I sure hope we find the fix. Because a swing and a miss again is going to set us back even further I believe.

Good post. I disagree with the idea that we can't afford to get rid of him however. If JP wanted he could hire a coach for cheap, thinking Bob Stitt here. In that case he'd have enough money to both pay off CPR and pay a new head coach. That, however, creates concerns about hiring a head coach with no major college football experience.

Alvarez was at a high school but Snyder had been coaching at the college level for awhile when Fry hired him.

I just read Peterson's DSM article.

He has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that PR still has support. When Jerry and 20 callers to the coach's show don't openly confront the issue then we have proof of fan support

Thanks for actually reading my rambling. We could, but I think most of us would stick with what we know and lose money then go with what we hope and lose even more. But I could be wrong. Just so you know, I would really like the Stitt hire.

Those 20 fans aren't exactly the best sample of the fanbase as a whole.
