Brackens got beat period. He was baited by Shipley and he bit on the move and there was no safety helping. U watch that play and we had nearly every DB within 5 yds of the LOS PRESSING for God knows what reason. Every single play this year we are always giving a 10 hd cushion all damn game every game and the last huge play we press and play man. Inexcusable.

It boggles the mind, it truly does. To see us giving the 10-yard cushion on 3rd and short all year only to play press coverage when all you really need to do is keep them in front of you for 3-4 plays. It's beyond dumb.

Because we had not invented a new way to lose yet this year. See at Iowa State we have to show everyone a new way to lose once a year. This was drive down the field in spectacular fashion and score a touchdown. Only to have our team give up 2 rediculous pass plays with hardly and time left on the clock. Then kick a field goal.

Yep. I figured that ISU would find a way to **** this down their pants and they didn't disappoint.

Clemson had tried to eclipse us in this category so we had to respond. And we did.

Even I didn't think we could possibly lose in regulation and had left myself wild open to the nut kick.

baffling play call compounded by poor execution(even though he was set up to fail)

The only explanation I can think of is if they were counting on Texas trying to complete something underneath. I like Wally but that one is on him.

Chip Brown on XM91 last night said that coach Strong had decided to take a knee and play it out in OT. But someone talked him into taking one shot down field. You know the rest of the story. Brown runs UT's Rivals site.

At the time, it looked like maybe Richardson was thinking of taking Shipley and seemed like Brackens waved him off, or was I just seeing things?

This loss is on Wally. I think ISU thought Texas was going to take a knee or throw underneath with 22 seconds left. Why else would you not have any safety help on that first deep ball?

Not remotely the same thing.

KC vs SD - Chargers had the ball at their own 20 down three points. FG doesn't beat you.
ISU vs UT - Longhorns had the ball at the 40 in a tie game. Any score beats you.

Seriously, I guarantee that the same people complaining about the defense would be the same ones complaining if ISU sat back in prevent and allowed UT to set up a long FG attempt that miraculously went in to beat us because We Are Iowa State.

Amen to that... Sometimes players botch assignments, sometimes coaches guess wrong, sometimes the other guys who are on scholarship too makes plays.

Love what the offense is starting to look like but can't think of the last time - its been YEARS - when I felt the defense could hold or win a game.

I am watching the Football Life on Doug Flutie and they are calling his drive against Miami a Football Miracle and needing something magical to happen and he had 28 seconds on his drive. Like someone mentioned earlier we can scratch this one off of the ways to lose games list.

I do not remember another team at the end of the game under a minute needing to make a play give up a 40 yard and 30 yard play to the same receiver in such a great place to get out of bounds. One play is a mistake, two plays is crappy. What were we thinking, Paul?

Same feeling I got when Tom Goedgen and team missed the PAT vs Nebraska in 1972 and repeated many times since. At least that was a tie.

I have a few questions. On the first pass, why did we have a linebacker covering Shipley man to man? Were there no other safeties or corners. On the two passes, where were the safeties? I am not a fan of the prevent defense, but with 22 seconds left and 74 yards to go, most teams have 2-3 safeties lined 20 yards deep at the snap. A safety should have been helping out on both of those last two passes. The prevent forces short passes and does not give up 39 and 29 yard passes. Our defenders should not have been in one on one situations deep on those plays. They should have had safety help.

Prevent Defense ??

Reading all of this made me really sad again. I feel like I should post something to show my sadness, but I had better not.

Good thing we were prepared and had our Victory-formation defense on the field. In all seriousness, there is no excuse, Brackens should never have been put in that position in the first place.

I was hoping that this year's entry would be giving up the 50-yd onside kick to OkSU, but apparently that game wasn't close enough for that play to count.

Another key aspect to being an ISU fan. Just when you think you've been kicked in the nuts enough, somehow you get another shot and this time it's with a baseball bat.
