I'm pretty sure there's a rule that you have to be in the conference to play in the conferences Bowl game unless its a lower bowl and the conference doesn't have enough eligible teams... But hey it could end up being a smart play by the Big12. ND isn't ever going to be good enough to play in that game anyways. ND still thinks they are high and mighty and if we inflate their heads even more with this chance at the Champions Bowl and we get more money out of it, why the hell not.

Every single one of the bowls is free to do what they want. Every Big East Bowl had an or Notre Dame option in the tie in.

There are no 'rules' for who Bowls can pick other than the contract they have with the conference.

IF ND isn't coming as a full member, **** em.

and so it begins. ND will do anything and everything to their advantage....if they are allowed......and apparently they will be. If they are allowed to piggyback into the new Champions Bowl, that is just wrong and foolish on our part. There is ALOT of disinformation out there now, but one thing remains constant....ND looking after ND interests at others expense. Count me in the join fully or no thanks crowd.

That guy lost all credibility with the last part about HS football on the LHN. Gee no kidding it's not illegal. ISU can pay our QB $5 Million a year without breaking any laws. The violation is of NCAA rules. If the NCAA makes a rule against school networks showing HS football games they still can. But they can also go ahead an not go to post season play ever again because the NCAA has sanctions on them.

His source is an idiot and therefore I don't believe anything he got from him.

I think I read somewhere that the NCAA rule is likely to be challenged in court as they have no authority over high schools and hence can not stop them from making money. That all could get interesting yet too.

I know we want ND first. But I say lets just add FSU and get to 11. Pretty much the same situation when the B1G added Penn State. Then see what ND wants to do, if they only want to be a partial member allow Clemson to join. If ND wants to be full, tell Clemson thanks but no thanks. If we go to Super Conferences, add Clemson and whoever else. If ND goes ACC, or doesn't come here partial... we just add FSU and maybe Louisville if we don't have a better option and would rather be at 12 than 11.

This is a legitimate option that never gets brought up. If FSU is serious about competing for $ with Florida this helps them as much as anything. At the end of the day the Big Ten didn't really do too bad with an awkward 11 for so long.

For those obsessed with the pie and the pieces it's cut into as if that's all that matters...FSU-only is probably second only to ND-only in terms of money boost the whole league could get.

If that argument is to hold then the NCAA can enforce nothing. LHN is owned by Texas, an NCAA school. If the NCAA can't prevent the UT from paying high schools through the broadcast of their games then the NCAA can't prevent the LHN from paying high school recruits families for reality shows following their days of being a high school recruit.

EG. New TV program on LHN called '5 star recruit' featuring every 5 star high school senior recruit in the nation that wants to be televised does a 10 minute segment per week and is paid to be on the show for $1,000,000 for the year.

The NCAA can't prevent that because the kid can make a living and has a right to earn money based on the argument about high schools. The NCAA can make whatever rule it wants about who NCAA institutions are allowed to pay, if they violate it by choice there is nothing illegal about it, but the NCAA can ban them from every post season event as a result.

The argument that a HS can make money does not mean the NCAA can't prevent a member institution from paying them. ESPN and ABC can freely broadcast that HS team.

+1

If FSU is legitimately in the picture I have little to no interest in ND. And selfishly I would enjoy ISU basketball 90 minutes away every year.

FSU could become a "real" conference member over time, especially if 12th to 14th teams are added toward the East. ND will always be ND.

The same can be said of Texas. If ND comes in partial with guaranteed games against B12 teams guess who won't be one of those teams? That only benefits UT, OU, and maybe FSU if they join. They get the benefit of the conference on the backs of the schools like ISU, KU, and Baylor.

Texas might get to play ND every year, but those other two schools wont. ISU would get their shot at them, and honestly it would be pretty stupid for us to want ND added to our noncon along with Iowa and then only having one easy win a year.

If ND could make the Champions Bowl as a partial member, that is outright stupid.

All or nothing, Irish. Get all in or stay all out.

NO...people need to quit saying this. LHN is owned and operated by ESPN...not the University of Texas. There is a big difference.

I say let the ACC hore themselves out to Notre Dame. That will begin their destabilization even though they think it would save the conference. They need a grant of rights to ensure stability. Exit fees are no more useful than cell phone contract cancellation fees.

Time for the NCAA to mandate the following:

1) A school may be a primary member of one conference.

2) For any school that chooses to become a primary conference member, if the primary conference sponsors a championship in a sport that the school offers, the school must play that sport in their primary conference.

3) If the primary conference does not offer a championship in a sport that the school offers, the school can affiliate as a secondary member with a conference that does offer a championship in said sport.

4) In selecting NCAA championship tournament fields, preference will be given to schools who have a primary or secondary conference membership in the given sport.

ND (and now BYU) has been mucking up the works long enough.

I don't understand why the NCAA permits long term independents in FBS anyway. In FCS, generally the only time there are independents is when schools are transitioning to a new conference.

On the BCS level, why do these conferences defer to ND's wishes?

I agree. It's so ridiculous in its current leadership makeup that the BCS would need to have every FBS AD in on the meetings to not be incredibly slanted toward the irish.

They have 10x the representation of any other school. It's as if the United States only had the Senate with no House of Representatives.

Precisely. One shcool wields the same power as one conference. Why?

If clemson wasn't ready to go but FSU was i'd still say grab FSU and go to 11. They'd add to the conference, and the big 10 did just fine for nearly 20 years with 11 teams and no divisions... we might be even better off with the 9 game schedule, we'd only miss 1 team a year.

It is mathematically impossible to have an odd number of games with an odd number of teams. 9x11/2=49.5 games.

Therefore, if we only added one school, we would have to go back to 8 games. That is not happening; therefore, it is either 2 or none.

No reason you couldn't go back. You just might have to make sure that everyone (looking at you texas tech) provides some value to our tv partners in the nonconference with that additional game.

This. That is why texas has a contract with ESPN to get $11 million a year from ESPN while ESPN runs it. Cyclones.TV on the otherhand is owned and operated by Iowa State University

And ESPN cannot do things under Texas's name (which is what they are doing with the LHN brand that texas does own) that the NCAA or the big 12 forbids. There's a reason there's not HS content on there, and its not for lack of ESPN wanting it.

Fine, whatever it doesn't matter.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Byz...lLTkxYTAtZTMzMjhiMDJmYzY0/edit?hl=en_US&pli=1

Per the contract above between the University of Texas and ESPN the content has to be agreed to by both ESPN and the University of Texas.

Meaning UT has the ability to direct programming in collaboration with ESPN, it also has to be programming in the interest of UT Mission based on the contract. So whoever the **** owns it doesn't matter. By being able to direct programming they can control who is getting paid by it. Meaning if it is paying players or high schools they can control that.

If the NCAA cannot regulate the above Iowa State can go into business with any 3rd party corporation that pays high school recruits if Iowa State and the corporation have to agree on who to do business with. And since ISU isn't the 'owner' of the third party corporation they'd be fine. Pretty big ******* loophole don't you think?

The NCAA can enforce a rule that doesn't allow the LHN to show HS games if Texas wishes to remain part of the NCAA. If they can't then there is no way the NCAA can prevent anyone from paying millions of dollars to recruits.

^This. I was in the process of typing my post when alarson posted it. The contract I linked above backs this up.

UT may not 'own' the network, but they have control over what can be shown on the network.
