Recommendations to eat Centrals BBQ, Corkys and there is a Coyote Ugly bar that is off the wall. Just a great town to go to and I can't imagine what it's like on New Year's Eve. It's right there with the French quarter.

We just booked our room at Best Western Galleria for ~$90/night. Ranked high on Trip Advisor - - life is too short for ****tacular hotels).

Shiloh was a critical battle in the civil war....it basically determined that the Confederacy could only be defensive in the west theater and launched the career of US Grant. The death toll there will put things in perspective for you if you are jaded by all the public opinion trolls on this website(and everywhere) telling you what is or isn't important in politcal gymnastics today. Something like 40,000 casualties. Think about that. I recommend the short trip east to see this battlesite.
There is some barbeque called "Pollards" I think that was on Restaurant Impossible tv reality show where they had a make-over and it was the most painful, embarassing mess I have ever seen. The guy signed up thinking he was going to get free stuff, and the over-the-top host basically told him his food sucked and his restaurant sucked. I would go there just to see if it hasn't been reverted to crap by now.
If you have kids, I would set aside a short day to go to City Museum in St. Louis.

I lived in Memphis for 4 years, just use ur head and stay out of shady areas and u will be fine. Germantown, collierville, Bartlett, and Arlington are all suburbs of Memphis that are nice places to stay. Most hotels around the liberty bowl are good and in decent neighborhoods. Wolf chase galleria mall has lots of great places to eat and lots of hotels, short little drive on interstate to the liberty bowl.

Read Grisham book "The Firm" this month!! MUCH better than the movie, and paints a good picture of Memphis. Good I say, not absolute reality. You can read it in about 4 days. Good stuff.

Been there on biz. Beale Street was overrated. Good BBQ. Graceland is good for some yucks (especially if you happen to catch some crazy Elvis fans @ his gravesite). West Memphis is to be avoided unless you're packing and looking for some gun play. Unsure if Mud Island still exists, but if it does, it's likely closed in December.

What he said. Nice areas to the east, North and South with pretty reasonable hotel rates around 100 for some Hampton inns.

I went to Memphis on spring break one year. I basically remember Beale Street, Platinum Plus, and Popeye's Chicken. Maybe some BBQ in there. The rest is a blur.

Of those who have seen it, is Graceland worth seeing or overrated?

If you have any interest in Elvis, I think it is worth seeing. There is the mansion itself, with the Jungle Room, Trophy room, etc., plus all the jumpsuits, the memorabilia, the car museum, the airplanes. It's like everything is frozen in time from the 70s. I think the tour was around $30 or $35 to see everything.

Definitley worth seeing. I've been to Memphis twice (soon to be three) and I've been to Graceland both times, really cool thing to do. If your bringing the kids I highly suggest the Memphis zoo, my son still talks about it and it's been over 2 years since our last trip.
