All of you predicting a 30 point blowout turn in your fan cards. Fred coached a hell of a game tonight and has coached Bill self to a draw in 4-5 times that Fred has coached against him. Even his 1st year in Ames was much closer than it should have been given the talent disparity.

Dude overshot and made an off-balance bank 3. Who's to say he still doesn't get it off, makes the 3 normally, and then hits the free throw to win? Seems just as likely...

Don't think anyone is advocating fouling him as he shoots it. Thought that was a given.

I don't understand why you wouldn't foul at the end of the game. Against a team like that, in an atmosphere like that, you have to take away any chance for them to get that shot off. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

Might be a few days before I get over this one.

No ****, but the way he was playing it's just as likely him or anyone else on KU is able to get up a shot while fouling.

As others have said, we couldn't lose with the three, but we could lose with a foul.

Exactly. You can't lose the game in regulation by making them shoot a contested 3. You can lose by fouling. End of story.

this makes little sense. We all know who wins in overtime. Fred knows that a made 3 into overtime is as good as a loss. Very bad fail. The proof is in the factual result. End of story.

From Dean Berhow-Gall on Twitter, Iowa State Daily sports reporter at the game:

This tweet makes Fred's decision at the end even more dumb.

If Fred is worried about fouling due to his small lineup, then that is even MORE reason that he should have called a timeout after KL's 2nd made FT. He could have gotten a bigger lineup in the game, and explained to the players what the plan was about fouling KU.

He did none of that, and got burned. The players had the game won, and Fred blew it. If he's half the man I believe he is, he will take the blame for this. Yes, Fred kept us in the game, and actually had the game won with his brilliant gameplan. But... it's all for nothing if you don't finish the deal. It's no different than a complete blowout now.

I love Fred Hoiberg, and want him to be at ISU forever. But he screwed this one over bad. He just did. I don't sugarcoat things like all the kool-aid drinkers do on here. Sorry.

What is Cyclone Dude talking about? The shot was contested and banked in. It sucks we had this game and it slipped through our fingers like that but no way you can put blame on anybody for this. Some people were thinking we would lose by 20 to 30. Our guys played great and Mcclemore put on a superman cape and made a unbelievable play. This is definitely different than a complete blowout.

This is a moronic post. You would have been screaming to the high heavens tonight if we'd have fouled and lost. Bottom line is if you don't foul the WORST case scenario is OT, and as a coach I agree with the decision to play it straight up every time.

You are out of your ******* mind.

I bet 90+% of coaches don't foul in that situation. It took a hot player overshooting and banking in a ridiculous 3 to get there.

It's completely different than a blowout. A blowout would be dejecting, this is a building moment in our first Big 12 game against the #6 team in the nation in the arguably hardest place to play in the nation. The team knows they had this won and let it slip away by not pushing at the end of the game and missing opportunities at the line. If they are true ballplayers, this should burn for them throughout the season.

Fred just talked about why he didn't foul and I agree with him. They banked in a three. They got lucky. It sucks.

Anyone blaming it on Fred is crazy.

Self said he wouldn't have fouled in that situation. I'll take the opinion of a coach with 8 straight Big 12 titles over the OP.

...so who's going to volunteer to bump these threads up in March if ISU makes the tourney?

Didn't see it but I'd assume they played their best game all season tonight. This means the earlier meltdowns from December were stupid. So are these.

Hopefully good things to come.

No bro, clonedude and a bunch of other internet morons know way more about situational basketball decisions than Fred does.
