Don't think we should consider the NBA in this comparison. MM is better w the ball, less turnovers more assists. Different type player as he is a "pass first" point not one that tries to score. Perfect point guard for this team. Also a kid that will probably be here for 4 years while Tinsley just stopped here on his journey to the NBA. Know who I would rather have.

I've never seen anybody better with the ball in college basketball than Tinsely. He toyed with defenders.

Yes, I know he turned it over a lot, but who cares? We won! Plus, if people remember a lot of Tinsley's turnovers where because he would make the sickest passes and the players weren't ready for them.

Even though I think Tinsley was better doesn't mean I don't think Monte is a STUD. Because he is!

Whichever side you are on, the question makes you think which is all you need to know about what Monte is doing right now at Iowa State.

Beat me to it. Was just going to say the same thing. Tinsley was one of the best ball handlers I've ever seen. Dribbling between defenders legs, etc. And his passing was insane too. He had more turn overs than Monte because he was much more aggressive.
I'm not trying to belittle Monte tho. He is damn good and I think he is invaluable to this team. He might be Fred's best high school recruit.

Tinsley had 153 turnovers during 1999-2000 and 117 during 2000-2001 season. Morris only turned over 35 times thus far this season. Also, Morris is a much better shoort than Tinsley. He is shooting 51% this season, which is incredible for a point guard. Tinsley only shot 37.8 and 39.9% during his 2 years at ISU.
Two completely different players. Tinsley had way more responsibility. Most of the time the offense ran through him and he made everybody better. Lots of ISU's stuff runs through Niang and works off of creating mismatches with their bigs because of a great offensive coach. Morris is a good guard but he has also benefitted greatly from the offense. Tinsley was the offense. Plus defense is half the game and Tinsley scared most other guards.

Are you sure the Pope will be okay with that?

Dedric was a stud....re-reading that it sounded like it might have been unflattering and I certainly did not mean that to be. Dedric was a better Cyclone....and the best Cyclones should be hung in the rafters. Mel and Royce White were awesome basketball players. Are we going to hang up everything like the hawkeyes do?

Nope. Just the ones that deserve it. Fizer and Tinsley.

Any year we have a point guard good enough that people compare him to Tinsley is a good year. Love Morris. He will have a chance to put his stamp on Cyclone history like Tinsley.

You and many posters here have selective memory on Tinsley. He was a great PG but he was turnover prone and careless at times. He also had great players around him. Fizer and Shirley played in NBA. How many players from current team will play in NBA?

I actually think Tinsley made Fizer and Shirley better. Fizer benefited from Tinsley more than Tinsley benefited from Fizer imo.

And Tinsley basically led the 00-01 team to a title on his own. He had some other solid-good players on the team, but no stars.

So in the same post that you belittle Jamaal Tinsley, you talk about Paul Shirley as a "great player"?...give me a break.

"I haven't seen every game that's ever been played here," Eustachy said, "but I don't know who in the history of Iowa State has impacted winning more than Jamaal Tinsley. He's Secretariat. He's a thoroughbred."

Eustachy's comments after winning our second Big 12 title, going 27-5 over two years in Big 12 play, with all 5 losses coming on the road, 4 of which were in overtime.
