Yes, this is true...but Cyclone fans want, more than anything... WINS against Iowa. I don't think Campbell shares that same "want" that the fans do. Not against Iowa. It sure doesn't look like it anyway.
I don't think there is any question about that. It's about having a culture where you take the rivalry game EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY. McCarney learned from Hayden, winning the instate game is a huge deal. Once McCarney beat Iowa in 1998, that was it, his Cyclone teams were always up for this game. Even in loses in Iowa City in 2004 and 2006 they played like they freakin wanted it. For once, in Ames, I would love to watch a Campbell coached team come out and play with their hair on fire like we did in 2005. Our crowd and team smelled blood, even before the kick off, you could just feel it. We competed well in 2017 on offense, but we do not have anywhere near the offensive skill talent of Butler, Park and Montgomery. Since then, it has been a sh#t on offense and special teams against Iowa. And you can also tell the Iowa program plays this game like it is their Super Bowl, though their fans will never admit that.

Agree. If we played Bama or Georgia like that, that’s an exceptable quote. Not programs on our level. You either win or lose at this level. Playing good against the Hawkeyes and losing is not exceptable

At home, losing for the 6th time in a row in our own stadium. Just a “we know we need to correct this, we’re going to correct this” would be better than the psycho-babble ********.

Who says kohl isn't ready? I don't think it matters, it's preposterous to think he's going to sit behind Rocco for 3 years.
I'm curious why people keep saying this as well about Kohl. Are there that many insiders on CyFan, or just plenty who think they are?

Am I the only one who looks back at the Purdy, Breece, Hutchinson, et al. team and wonders “what if?” Purdy seemingly got worse every year in Ames, gets into the league with a real coach and clicks.

Purdy's worst season for QBR was 2020 by quite a large margin. Best was 2018 with the least amount of games (10) and one 'gimme' ish game when OSU had no film on him.

His best pass completion % was 2021.

As someone who has spent the vast majority of their adult life outside Iowa, I don't really get bent out of shape about losing to them. For me, the fun with a coach runs out when you see them hit their ceiling and refuse to change. That's what I'm taking away from this game. In sports, you lose. But if you're not willing to consider that there might be alternatives to what you're doing when you lose, what's the point?

The scary thing is the offense should have been even better than it was when we had Purdy, Hall, etc. I've said it numerous times, and nothing I've seen recently makes me believe any different.

I lost a lot of faith in Campbell today. And it's not even about losing to Iowa - that happens. It's that the **** show on offense continues. When Manning was fired it was a real opportunity to finally do something new and revolutionary with the offense... and instead Manning's underling was hired and somehow the offense is even more predictable and uninspiring than it was with Manning.

For the last several years we've had one of the, if not the, best defenses in the Big 12... and every since the Fiesta Bowl win every one of those defenses has been wasted by horrific offense. And guess what - the defense just isn't as good this year.

It's going to be a long year.

They knee-capped Purdy, they knee-capped Dekkers, and they will knee-cap Kohl when he gets his shot. It’s so strange.

I wouldn't say they "ruined" him - he seems to be doing pretty well in the NFL, and you don't just "fix" a QB that quickly. But he was absolutely misused.

He could have been drafted a lot higher if CMC hadn’t misused him.

And how he’s performing in the NFL just proves my point…. he should have been a lot better in college than he was.

You’re missing what CMC is about. Expecting him to change things up just to beat Iowa means you’re missing the reason that he’s not having a lot of success lately. As a fan, I now get that he’s going to die on his hill. totally know he’s not going to try win a game for the fans - no coach approaches a game like that.

He looked absolutely inept against Uni so I doubt he is ready for tougher competition. He looked like a red-shirt might get him up to speed. I realize this is only one game, I was going to say the coaches should know but at this point I'm not sure about that either.

I wish I could agree. Iowa completely dominated the game.

Their offense isn’t great, so they went ultra-conservative once they got ahead by 2+ scores, but I’m not entirely convinced they couldn’t have moved the ball more if they had to be aggressive. Our defense also looked the worst it has in the CyHawk game since 2017 (obviously not blaming them, they’ve just been lights-out for the past four years, but really weren’t today).

The offense was non-existent until Iowa went prevent. Even when given the chance to nab some easy yards, ISU torched the clock that ultimately shrunk their margin of error to zero and even that was just the cherry on top of a TERRIBLE coaching performance.

In a game where the special teams had a field goal blocked and multiple negative yard punt returns, it was still probably the second-best special teams performance of the Campbell era (behind last year).

The Iowa-Iowa State game isn’t important because it’s a rivalry, it’s important because it’s a yardstick for Iowa State to measure program health against the team that arguably nearest meets its current environment, a very public yardstick that is seen by in-state recruits. I don’t think anyone that watched the game today would say that Iowa didn’t widen the current gap between the programs in the past twelve months.

On top of that, there’s not really a light at the end of the tunnel. I don’t see anything that Campbell and company are doing right now that’s going to raise our ceiling in the foreseeable future. I just am not sure how long you should let Campbell risk widening the gap even further before trying something new.
Sadly, this is completely accurate. It’s so painfully obvious the very real tier gap between the programs.

So what point is he trying to prove to anyone by losing? That makes no sense.
